Have you decided how you are going to dress for Halloween? perhaps you should seriously consider dressing in a Gothic costume. Gothic costumes have always been a good choice. They were extremely popular back in the 1970's. The Gothic novels and old horror films had a tremendous effect on the youth cultures in Europe and the United States of America. This culture scene, know as The Goths, was developed through Goth music and the creation of elaborate Gothic clothing for unique costumes.

The Gothic bands that appeared during this time were a huge influence on the clothes, hair and make-up that were all an important part of creating the Gothic costume. The stage costumes worn by these bands had a profound influence on their fans. The great thing about Gothic costumes is that it allowed each person to show their own creativity. They were able to experiment with different dress-up looks and portray a character that was very different from what was expected from adults and their own peers. The popular colors used in Gothic costumes were black, purple and dark red. They were created out of satin and velvet and frilly lacey type materials. Women would fashion their costumes after the characters portrayed in the vampire horror films. Young women of the Goth culture were particularly found of wearing black fishnet stocking and gloves. Men liked to include a fancy and frilly shirt like the ones that were worn by the romantic poets in the creation of costume attire. Many Goth costumes were finished with the addition of accessories such as a studded dog collar, silver buckles, silver jewelry and of course the classic Gothic chokers. Both men and women wore white make-up and accentuated their eyes with mascara and black eye liner. Black fingernail polish was used by both sexes along with the popular red, purple and black lipsticks.

The seaside resort of Whitby, England is the location of the largest yearly Goth gathering. Whitby is the town where Bram Stoker set his original Dracula horror story. At this event, they show all the newer vampire films such as "Interview with a Vampire" which was based on a novel by Anne Rice and Tim Burton's film, "Beetlejuice". They also show all the classic Dracula and other horror films. People have a chance to get caught up in costume portrayal of their favorite Gothic character. The music created by the many Goth bands had a profound influence on the development of the Gothic culture. Dancing to the music created by these bands is a large part of fun and entertainment enjoyed by the Goth culture. The Goth bands created during this popular Gothic movement had some very interesting names such as Death Cult, Siouxsie and the Banshees, Sister of Mercy, The Cure and Killing Joke were among some of the popular Goth groups of the time and some of the members of these groups still perform at Goth gatherings.

Many of the young people who chose to portray the distinctive Goth look were not appreciated by their elders and peers. In Fact, these young people were made fun of and bullied around. Many of the youth who dressed in Gothic style were insecure about how they looked. These same young people felt that the Gothic look gave them a character they could hide behind and boosted their self confidence so they could deal with daily life. The late 1970's culture tended to force a need to look perfect and the majority of young people were all trying to look like fashion models, but dressing in Gothic costumes allowed for the expression of individuality. Today, the Goths are still around, but their numbers have depleted. Most of these people have outgrown the need to express themselves in Gothic costumes in daily life. Those youth of the 1970's have grown into adults and have children of their own. These same adults still have many of the same friends & associates who shared the Gothic culture culture. They share fun now by attending special Goth gatherings & parties and exchange photographs of each other dressed in their favorite Goth attire. These people who shared the Gothic culture will have interesting stories to tell their children.
