Why is it important to prevent or cure bacterial vaginosis and how do you cure or prevent it?  Here are a few tips:

Go to your doctor if you suspect you may have BV.

Why You Should Take BV Seriously

The most obvious reason to take BV seriously is the main symptoms it cause; itching and bad odor from vagina. But there are other reasons as well.  Although BV does not normally cause difficulties, there are some serious risks from having the condition.  These include:

1. Having BV can increase predisposition to HIV infection if exposed to the virus.

2. Having BV increases the chances that a woman infected with HIV can pass the infection to her sex partner(s).

3. Be aware that females with BV who have HIV-infection should have the same BV treatment as those who are free of the virus.

4. Having BV may increase the development of an infection following surgeries, such as a hysterectomy or an abortion.

5. Some doctors will advise women who are planning an abortion or hysterectomy to be treated for BV before surgery to lower the risk of getting infection.

6. Having BV while pregnant may put a woman at risk for complications of pregnancy.

7. Treatment for bacterial vaginosis is crucial for pregnant women.

8. Any pregnant woman who has ever had a baby weighing less than 5 pounds 8 ounces, or had a premature delivery, should  consider taking a BV exam, regardless of symptoms.

9. All pregnant women who have symptoms of BV should have an exam and be treated.

10. BV increases a woman's probability to get other sexually transmitted diseases, like for example Chlamydia, Gonorrhea and Herpes Simplex Virus (HSV).

How to Cure Bacterial Vaginosis

1. Rest assured that BV is treatable with antibiotics prescribed by a doctor.

2. Two different antibiotics are recommended as treatment for BV. Your health care provider will know which is right for you.

3. There are great alternatives to antibiotics (see at the bottom of this article)

4. Sometimes we see that BV clears up with no treatment.

5. Always keep in mind that bacterial vaginosis can recur even after treatment.

6. Use all medications your doctor has prescribed for treatment of BV, even if the symptoms disappear.

When Should You Seek Treatment?

1. Every woman with symptoms of bacterial vaginosis should take treatment to prevent complications

2. Male sexual partners of women with BV will normally not need treatment.

3. Be aware that BV can spread between female sexual partners.

Prevention of BV

Below are some tips you can follow to reduce the risk of getting BV:

1. If you are sexually active at least limit the number of partners you have sex with.

2. Douching should be avoided.

Be aware of alternatives out there to cure bacterial vaginosis that might be more efficient than antibiotics, in particular regarding recurring BV.
