After a complaint from a North Carolina man, wholesale-retail giant, COSTCO has apparently played their hand in the racism game.

According to chain emails, reports and word of mouth, many Americans have been once again, faced with another racial insult. COSTCO recently presented a new addition to their toy department, the "Cuddle Me" doll. This isn't just another doll with accessories, when the baby is wearing a hat with "Lil' Monkey" inscribed on the front; go figure that her trusting friend is a 'monkey':

(c) webmail

Now, many will state that this is not a racist matter. But, I would bet that the same who feel it isn't racial, would feel differently if faced with a misrepresentation for their "skin-color"; to add more points in favor of this opinion, COSTCO immediately pulled the "racist" doll, accompanied by her friendly monkey. But, there are more "Cuddle Me" dolls on their shelves, and this time: Asian dolls with Panda Bears! Now, how is that for discrimination?

Of course, COSTCO supplied the media outlets with their version of the incident, proclaiming that it was not any intent to be a racial account towards any - one [people]. If this is the case, why associate the toys you are selling to any particular race of children; sell for all children. I may need to be a bit more elaborate on what I just stated. So, here goes:

If I had a retail outlet that catered to all-people, I would sell "all-people" items. Not just an item that reflects on a little [black] girl, or a game designed for latino boys would fill my shelves. I would buy universal items that children of all nationalities can enjoy. After all, they are only children. Not just black, white, asian, hispanic children. But children with young hearts, minds and imaginations.

I would like to recall a recent comment left on a previous [racial] submission of mine: Racism is taught ... enough said.

Great article. Well done.

I see how this could be seen as racist but had the baby been white I would not have been all that bothered.

I'm sure that it's mere stupidity and total ignorance and gross idiocy rather than intentional insensitivity or anti black prejudice;I lived in East Texas for years, teaching junior college predominately thronged  with Baptists and Methodists and as the only Jew I heard such widespread rascist antisemitism directed at me, albeit good naturedly, that it also qualified as gross stupidity because they were much too dumb to actually be prejudiced.Paul Schroeder

Great comment, Paul. And it's just like I stated in this submission (repeating another's comment), racism is taught, and naturally the students did that out of what they were taught, and not actually realizing the depth of what they were doing ... to this, I pray: "Lord forgive them, for they know not what they do ..."

Thanks for reading Paul, and leaving a comment.

You find the best things to bring into the light! I cannot imagine a large corperation being so obtuse. Maybe I am naive but this is so blatant and obvious. Marijo

Not so much naive, Marijo; if this was so, I'd be just as naive. Sometimes, I like to look at it as me missing out on ignorance - saved, actually (smile). But me being a journalist makes my job a dirty one.

Thanks for reading and sharing a comment, Marijo. the best to you and your family.

Why does the author take these things so personal? Obama is giving you everything you need. What is happening to capitalism?

Glenn, first off, I have no idea of what you are trying to state here in your comment, but it sounds like sarcasm, and a bit off the point of the matter. But you used this time and space to gain credits, I guess. So your comment has no affect on me, nor whatever POTUS is doing or giving for that matter to AMERICA, probably you included. I am hoping this is personal enough for you.

Thank you for reading, but no thanks for cutting my ratings :). Have a nice day.

Further proof for the importance of corporate market sensitivity consultants (I sort of made this title up, but not entirely). You might want to see if such a thing exists, outside of the normal in-house "HR" department.

There is lots of consumer marketing research being done, isn't anybody actually using it?

thanks  R,

Great article, Ronyae. I hadn't seen this before, but I would have had (and do now) the same sentiments as you. For the life of me, I can't understand how some people can be so blantantly ignorant! I was born and raised in the South and as a Baptist, but I could NEVER understand this racist thing that people just can't seem to let go of! As a child and now as a great-grandmother several times over, I never gave a thought to a persons color, race, religion, or handicaps. None of this makes any sense to me. May God straighten us all out one day---and soon!

Thanks for an insightful article.

Sandra

Ronyae,

I'm shocked that this kind of stuff still goes on. I would like to think that we, as a society are past that. I guess I live in my own little world, huh?
