The Kovacs Perspective

My friend Jim is a sound engineer in the radio business, has been for thirty years. He makes sure all electrical components are operating smoothly and all audio sounds are clear while the on-air talent hosts a music or a talk show. Recently, Jim was working on a show with a nationally renowned disc jockey where many famous oldies singers were guests. One of Jim's duties that night was calling up stars for their phone interviews and taking telephone calls from others who were calling in. On this particular night, one of the stars interviewed was the famous singer Dion. Jim told me about a funny story he mentioned during the interview.

Dion said that as a younger man, he and other stars would tour together, and during breaks, they would talk about the good-looking women in the audience. They would say things like, did you see the brunette with the purple sweater in the second row, or take a look at the blonde in the first row, she's a knockout.

Dion said every now and then the same fellows still get together and do some oldies tours. Now though, when they have their breaks they do not talk about the good-looking girls in the audience anymore. No, now they talk about what medications they are on and compare side effects! Wow, things sure have changed! Well , change is something we all do, as we get older, I certainly have.

I've done a little research into what some bright people have to say about getting older. I have included them here to enlighten all of us who are older or getting there. Even if you are not over the hill but on top of the hill looking down perhaps, look at some of these quotes and see if any ring a bell.

Author unknown
Age mellows some people; others it makes rotten.

Edith Wharton
It spite of illness, in spite even of the archenemy sorrow, one can remain alive long past the usual date of disintegration if one is unafraid of change, insatiable in intellectual curiosity, interested in big things, and happy in a small way.

Tom Wilson
Wisdom doesn't necessarily come with age.
Sometimes age just shows up all by itself.

Bernard Baruch
( This one is my personal favorite) To me, old age is always fifteen years older than I am.

Latin proverb
Never too old to learn.

Ralph Waldo Emerson
The age of a woman doesn't mean a thing. The best tunes are played on the oldest fiddles.

Irish proverb
Never complain about growing old. Many are denied the privilege.

George Burns
You know you're getting old when you stoop to tie your shoelaces and wonder what else you could do while you're down there.

If I am fortunate to keep getting older, I am going to make the best of it. I am going to do everything I possibly can to make the best with what I have available. And if one day medications interest me more than let's say Miss America, so be it, I'll just make sure I get sexy meds!

Hi Steve, I wouldn't be considered old by many, but I certainly feel it sometimes! It's fascinating to see how different people cope with the aging process, how some run for the hills and how others simply embrace and revel in what comes their way. I wonder how I will do as the years advance? Enjoyed the article. Julian

Steve,

This was wonderrful!  And, oh so true!  I especially like Emerson's.

I now look in the mirror and wonder how to count the wrinkles.  (It's a real bonus that I' m married to someone who can touch up my photos!)

Any chance you've been speaking to groups around the country for the past 15 years or so?  I once was given an audio tape about security which was so well done but I can't remember the name of the man who spoke.  Clue, place a dog bowl outside your door that says 'Killer.'  Never forgot that.

Thanks Nancy--I think Emerson was a genius--he has more great quotes than just about anyone--and yes, this quote of his is a good one. How cool that you have that touch up possibility in your family--lucky you!   I have spoken to groups throughout

the years and I probably have used the killer dog bowl example a time or two.  If it was me you heard, thanks for the kind words and if it was not me, I'll take the credit anyway--ha-ha-ha-----thanks for writing!

You gotta love Emerson! Great article Steve. Like you, I'm going to make the best of getting older. What choice do we have? :) Like my husband always says when we spend time with older people, "We've all got it coming."

Yeah really, what choice do we have! I liked the George Burns quote--probably because I can just relate to doing goofy things as I get older--I actually got a belly laugh when I read that one--that in itself says I'm old! Thanks for writing.

Having just reconnected with an old friend I can really relate to the article.  We didn't talk too much about medication though.

Though I am getting up there I now feel like 23.  Of course when, I was 23, I was more like 6, but that story is for another time.  But a friend of mine informed me "you are not 23! Act your age!" When I did and I started riding my bicycle 20 miles, as I usually do, I started feeling unusual aches and pains.  I said "hell with that! I am 23!" Suddenly, the aches and pains went away.  Age is not a true factor in one's life it is a frame of mind.

Well said and I agree with you. Sounds like a cliché but I agree that most of it is a frame of mind and belief. Thanks for your story and opinion.

Hi Steve, I loved this article, thanks! I am still laughing. I was blessed to see another year yesterday and shared with a friend, I'm not like I used to be and in many ways, that's such a good thing. In many respects, I'm much better and like you, I'm plan to enjoy each year I'm blessed to get older . . . sexy meds and all! By the way, give me your source for those, ok? *laughing*

Be well and enjoy a fantastic weekend.

Older, wiser, better and ... sexy, too!

Great piece Steve.

This reminds me of my sister (she is very funny) who refers getting old as, "You know when you are getting older when the good Lord starts taking a little bit of you...a little bit of your hearing, a little bit of your eyesight, a little bit of your speed" LOL

Loved this article. Thanks.

Best to you and yours,
