Nellie R Stevens is a hybrid plant, between Ilex aquifolium and Ilex cornuta. It has radiant looks, with dark green leaves and excellent fruit production. We can say that Nellie R Stevens Holly has the darkest leaves among the plants. It is a fast growing plant reaching up to 20 30 feet in height and spreads over 10 12 feet. The tree grows into a beautiful broad pyramid shape and is tolerant to heavy clay soils. It can even withstand extreme drought conditions. These aesthetic qualities of the tree and the tolerance to the harsh climatic conditions make it more popular for use in the landscapes and gardens.

Nellie R Stevens Holly is widely available in a nursery , in small and medium sizes. You can plant it either in a container or in the ground. You can use these trees as hedges, buffer strips around the parking lots, residential street tree, Christmas tree, sidewalk cutout and in large parking islands.

The shape of the leaf is oblong and is of 2-4 inches long. It is an evergreen tree and does not have a color change or fall during winters. The flowers of the tree are white in color and are not showy. The flowers bloom during springs and are inconspicuous. The tree has abundant fruits, which are less than 0.5 inches length. The color of the fruits are thick red, and do not attract wildlife, but birds from February or early march. It makes a wonderful winter tree and is suitable for decorating both indoors and outdoors. The bark of the tree is thin, so it is prone to injury. It requires pruning for the pedestrian clearance under the shade. The tree grows with several trunks; however, if you want it to grow with a single trunk, it can through training.

Nellie R Stevens Holly grows in both partial shade, partial or in full sun. It can tolerate clay, loam, sand, and slightly alkaline, acidic, and well drained soils. It has an excellent extreme drought tolerance. These excellent qualities of the tree made it more popular in the warmer regions of the country, and are an ideal choice as a screen or a border. It grows uniformly with a very little pruning and is widely available. There should be enough space provided for the tree growth as it becomes wider at the base as it grows. Nursery developers grow the tree either as a single stem or as a multi stem. The main branches of the tree connected strongly to the trunk making it more stable and a permanent fixture for any landscape. The bright red berries produce a prolific content that gives an advantage to the plant to produce fruits even without a male tree. However, the main propagation of the plant is not through the seeds but by cuttings or grafting.

There is no report of any pests or diseases to be a major concern for the plant. However, scaling happens occasionally to the plant.
