"My Fire Pit is brand new, why should I be worried about maintenance?"

It's true, we could totally ignore it and our fire pit will work just fine for a long time to come. But with just a few simple maintenance ideas in mind, we can easily extend our fire pits life well beyond the manufactures warranty, making sure we get the maximum number of years of enjoyment from it. And, like anything, if we maintain our fire bowl regularly, the job will be quick and easy!

So here are a few tips:

1. It's important to make sure your outdoor fire bowl is regularly emptied of ash and embers. This will help prevent soot and embers ending up all over your patio or backyard! Once all embers have cooled down enough to touch, probably the following day, remove and put them in a non-combustible container and dispose of responsibly.

2. A cast iron fire pit may be coated with vegetable oil every 10 to 12 fires to help prevent rust from forming on the iron. Some patio fire pits, fire bowls and chimineas may require occasional painting. High temperature spray paint for grills is available at most hardware stores. Or you may also use high temp automotive spray paints designed for engine blocks. Ask your local paint store representative which paint is best for your type of pit.

3. A good practice is to cover your fire bowl when not in use or if you live in an area with harsh winter conditions, store your bowl in a dry covered area so as to keep it in top condition.

4. Never pour water on a hot fire pit! The sudden temperature change can actually break the bowl or result in the deterioration of the walls.

5. Be careful not to drop your firepit which may result in breakage or damage.

6. Finally, do not throw plastic or anything that could explode into your pit. Plastic is difficult to clean up is hazardous to the health and the environment.

Following these simple steps in taking care of your outdoor fire pit will help ensure its continued use for many years to come so you can enjoy those relaxing evenings with family and friends.

So, how about lighting up your fire pit tonight?
