Somehow security slid off the face of the earth. Just a few years ago there were big gobs of it all over the place. Sometimes you worried about things, but security wasn't one of those things. On Main Street or on Wall Street, do you feel secure?
Who hid the security that our fathers and grandfathers, the legal immigrants and founders fought and died for?
Our ancestors worked hard and squirreled away enough money to get by on in their retirement years, many times with the help of their adult offspring. Now we have Social Security and Medicare but we're less secure than when we depended on our family for help.
Somebody definitely mislaid our security. We were all in the back yard, collectively relaxing in the chaise lounge and somebody cut the legs off the furniture while we were snoozing.
Maybe our security was embezzled. Maybe Timothy Geithner had something to do with it. Barney Frank? Bernie Madoff? How about President Obama and the U.S. Congress with their tax and spend policies?
I know somebody stole our security and I can almost put my finger on who did it. It was right over there when I was nine years old. I turned my back on it for just a minute and then it was gone. I found it again when I was seventeen and managed to hang onto it for about a year and a half and then woossshhh...gone again!
It might have been the neighbors. It's tough always jogging to keep up with 'the Joneses' and always staying a lap behind. I'm winded, aren't you?
I know security still has to be around somewhere. If it was there forty-five years ago, it couldn't have dissolved, could it?
Maybe it's in a song, a poem, a love letter or a hug or a child's laughter.
Nobody robbed you of your security, my friend. There's my security right there next to yours. Right there...next to courage, honor and strength. We all just have to look for it, respect it and fight for it.
