The phishing scam were a user receives an e-mail which tries to get them to visit a bogus website and part with their personal and financial details is high on public awareness on scales almost as high as the Nigerian money scam. Fraudsters are always looking for new ways to steal your money and personal information and SMishing is the latest variant of the phishing fraud scheme.

SMishing is phishing through SMS or text message, which gives it its name. The scam works by sending you a SMS with an enticing offer and then inviting you to reply direct to the SMS or calling a number to attempt to get you to give up confidential financial information.

There are different variations of the scam and the fraudsters will use different methods to attempt to lure victims into calling a telephone number. One scam message to work out for is when then sends you a message stating you have to call a number to confirm or activate account settings or to get free offers.

If you think about the millions of mobile phones in use with kids from 8 years old and OAPs using phones, not only do fraudsters have a massive audience but a wide age group to target their scam with. It is estimated more than 60% of British people have been targeted with the scam in the last year alone.

The smishing fraud scheme works in conjunction with fraudsters other latest scam, vishing. Voicemail phishing, vishing, uses internet voice calls to attack consumers and is used in conjunction with this latest scheme.

When the user calls the scam number they will be asked for the credit card details needed to put through transactions of fraud. Never give any credit card details but to watch out for giving, full credit card number, the cvv code found on the bank and expiry date, this will be enough to put payments through.

It is easy to think that you won't agree to a fraud scheme when called but unless you have been scammed before you may be surprised that in fact you do agree to their demands. Never reply to a text message, call a number or give personal or business financial information to someone you don't know.

Attend the next marcus evans scam conference so you can educate your business employees and take steps to prevent fraud.
