Decorating ideas are largely dependent on the size and shape of the room you are embellishing. Some styles can be overwhelming in a small space but there are other fashions that look just right. Another thing to consider is whether the room you intend to decorate gets plenty of sunlight and what time of day the sun reaches that room. Does the small room you are going to decorate feel warm or cold when you walk into it? I'm not talking about the actual physical temperature here, but the ambiance of the room. You do need to take such things into account when you are considering how to decorate in small spaces.

Taking Ambiance into Account

If your room always seems to exude a chill, regardless of the temperature, you need to consider the appropriate color when you are deciding how to decorate in small spaces. It really is important to get the ambiance right. A chilly greeting as you enter a room is often enough to have you avoiding that room: choose a bright cherry-red color and perhaps team it up with a soft sky blue (a couple of shades deeper than baby blue). Rather than heavy drapes that keep out whatever light that room may get, go for vertical blinds in a soft mint green (and, yes - mint green does go really well with the blue and the red: trust me!).

To maximize the appeal of the room, go for clean, straight lines where possible. Forget fussy furbelows and frippery: leave those for larger rooms that are able to take the fussy look. Knowing how to decorate in small spaces is an art and takes considerable forethought but the end result is well worth the time and effort that you put into this project.

Color Scheme

No matter whether you are painting a huge room or a room with smaller characteristics, choosing the most suitable color scheme is an extremely important factor. When you are about to think about how to decorate in small spaces it is important that you allow plenty of time to mull over your color scheme. Before choosing your color scheme you also need to decide whether you are going to aim for cozy chic or cool, sophisticated elegance. If the latter is the case then you need to learn how to decorate in small spaces and incorporate stylishness with the most appropriate panache.

Your overall aim, regardless of size, is to finish your project with a space you feel comfortable living in. So, cozy chic or elegant panache or even a haven of serenity. You can achieve any of these touches if you choose your color scheme wisely. When painting, regardless of size, always start by painting your ceiling. Now, if you are painting a large room, I would always choose white for the ceiling. However, I find that, when considering how to decorate in small spaces, white is much too stark. Choose a much lighter shade of the main color you have chosen for your room, such as an pastel blue, or one of those 'hints of' paints that are on the market.

Get yourself a color wheel and choose the cooler shades - the blues and greens which have so many variants of the different tones and hues, thereby providing you with an enormous range to choose from. Contrary to popular belief, blues and greens go together extremely well as long as you pick the right shades of each: make sure the colors you pick don't clash outright!
