There are many casualties as a result of the trying financial times, and with that Yahoo has announced that they will be shutting down their free web hosting service, GeoCities. This service has been offering free web hosting for the past decade, but Yahoo is finding that this service has become antiquated and therefore they are letting go of it.

Yahoo is going to let people keep their sites open with several different forms of service plans that will need to be paid for starting in the beginning of November. They just can't afford to keep it free any more. The idea of having a paid plan as an option will at least let people keep their sites open if the want to.

GeoCities made anyone with a site put a bunch of ads on it. With these emerging services that have a cost to use, you don't have to do the ads. There are so many different, fresh forms out there now for the use of social media that GeoCities is obviously outdated. This is more evident now than ever. It does deserve a place in history though, and the old stuff is being saved because of it.

Yahoo has owned GeoCities for a while (since 1999) and actually purchased this web hosting service for a little less than $3 billion and during that time it has served as precursor to many of the social media and self publishing tools of today. And although it is being trimmed as fat it has served Yahoo well for their small investment ten years ago.

The internet is rapidly changing and with it companies must keep pace with the changes and advances that are being made. Yahoo is still a strong company, but part of being a strong company is realizing when a service has stopped being useful. Their willingness to put GeoCities to rest is one of the things that makes them one of the internet leaders.

It is becoming clear that free php hosting is becoming very outdated. If you want decent professional php hosting you will have to pay for it to be happy.
