When I was release from active duty from the military in 1969 I went to work. In those days with the college demonstrations, the hippies, yippies and what have you there were also the sounds of music through those turbulent times.

When I heard the song "We've Only Just Begun to Live" by the Carpenters, in my mind, I had a different version of the interpretation of the lyrics in this song. Apparently, the song seems to relate to a young couple getting married and just starting off in life.

However, I believe the real inspiration behind the song (the way I took it anyway) it was defining we as a people evolving through the years. First as an aggressive creature to a more gentle and refined species and in those days in particular we were just beginning to live as a civilized society.

Read the lyrics to the song or better yet get the CD and listen to them and let your mind just drift back into this epoch of time when we as a people in the world were just beginning to live.

We've only just begun to live
White lace and promises
A kiss for luck and we're on our way
We've only begun

Before the rising sun we fly
So many roads to choose
We start our walking
And learn to run
And yes! We've just begun

Sharin' horizons that are new to us
Watchin' the signs along the way
Talkin' it over just the two of us
Workin' together day to day, together

And when the evening comes we smile
So much of life ahead
We'll find a place where there's room to grow
And yes! We've just begun

Sharin' horizons that are new to us
Watchin' the signs along the way
Talkin' it over just the two of us
Workin' together day to day, together, together

And when the evening comes we smile
So much of life ahead
We'll find a place where there's room to grow
And yes! We've just begun

Good thoughts, David. I like the fact that every day is a new beginning and we have "just begun" for that day. Fran Larson

I too, find songs by the Carpenters meaningful in its way although Carol died young but we really still enjoy their songs ever sweet to listen.
