Choosing the type of education for your children is an important decision that will affect the rest of their lives. Too many families jump into situations without fully researching the pros and cons of all types of education and comparing them to the needs of their children.

In general, there are two options for parents when it comes to the education of their children: private school or public school.

Each type of school has its pros and cons and supporting one type of education over the other is something that has been debated for many years. The best we can do is provide you with the facts; the final decision is up to you and your child.

Public School

The great thing about public schools is that they are accepting of all students, regardless of their parent's income, their academic needs or their social needs. Public schools are required by law to educate all children, including those with special needs.

When it comes to tuition, public schools are not allowed to charge parents tuition for their children attending school. Public schools are funded by federal, local and state taxes and, as a result, are available at no cost to families.

Public school curriculum is set for all children and cannot be customized to suit the needs of one or all of the children attending. The curriculum generally consists of classes in English, math, science, history, art, music and physical education but can vary slightly depending on the specific school.

Private School

Private schools do not accept all students and are very exclusive when it comes to their selection process. Private school students are generally held to a higher standard than those enrolled in public school and, as a result, can become very cliquey when it comes to their social circles.

Private schools are not funded by taxes and can be very expensive for families. Private school can cost thousands of dollars per year and can increase at any time. If you're thinking of enrolling your child in private school, you may want to consult your budget beforehand to make sure you can afford this type of education for years to come.

The curriculum offered through private schools is one of the biggest advantages of this type of schooling. Unlike public schools, private schools have control and flexibility over the curriculum they offer their students.

Many parents also choose private schooling for their children because of the smaller class sizes. Private schools insist on small classrooms which means more individual attention for each student while public schools try to keep class sizes small but cannot guarantee this for their students.

Julianna Trenton has researched the pros and cons of private schools vs public schools and has even considered the benefits of homeschooling. She shares her advice and knowledge with the readers of AmericanEducationNetwork.com.
