English Ivy, also referred to as Hedera helix, is a hardy evergreen climbing vine or used as a groundcover that has dark green, glossy leaves. English Ivy grows 6 - 8 inches when used as a ground cover and can climb to 9 feet as a vine. English Ivy has been recommended for use as a low maintenance alternative to lawns because it is evergreen, relatively pest free, very cold hardy and fast-growing groundcover that requires little care once established. Plant English Ivy 18 inches apart to create a carpet affect.

When you are considering planting English Ivy plant each plant 18 inches apart or refer to the measurement of 100 plants cover a 225 square foot area. Ivy is a wonderful plant to have if you have a stubborn area that nothing seems to grow right or something that is just unbearable to look at. For instance, trash, old rusted tractor, etc.

Ivy can be a great plant to plant in an area that is hard to get things to grow in because ivy seems to grow anywhere. Once ivy gets a good start it is almost impossible to get rid of it. It takes a few plants to get a good start on it and ivy is generally inexpensive. If you are wanting to plant ivy in a large are the best way to purchase it is bare root or without a pot. This way you can get more plants for your money.

Ivy makes a great addition to any area which gets partial sun and shade. One plant can get up to 6-8 feet once it reaches full maturity. Adding a bunch of plants together can rapidly take over any are. Ivy looks great in a field, growing up an arbor or lattice and anywhere that it can thrive.
