Mazarron in Murcia on Spain's Costa Calida has been popular with holidaymakers for over a century, and it is easy to see why. Mazarron consists of two main urban centres, the Port and approximately 5km inland the town capital. The foothills of the Sierra de la Almenara mountains surround Mazarron Bay creating it's own 'microclimate' which invariably means better weather than the rest of Spain and over 300 days of sunshine a year. Fishing still plays a major part in Mazarron's economy and in the port & fish market it is possible to get a taste of the town's seafaring tradition. Mazarron is the perfect place to enjoy a wide range of leisure and nautical activities whilst also enjoying it's historical sites.
Mazarron's 35km coastline is made up of many pretty coves which are great for sunbathing as well as other water sports including diving. The four beaches of Rihuete, La Reya, Nares and Casteller all have 'Blue Flag' status which is a measure of their cleanliness, safety and services. The shelter of the mountains helps the sea stay warmer too. It is not unheard of for expats to mention how it is like the 'Cornwall of Spain'. The promenade is lined with many shops, restaurants and bars with easy access to the beaches.
The streets of Mazarron offer a wide array of monuments. The Modernist Town Hall and Former Cultural Association constructed at the beginning of the 20th Century are of particular interest. The church of San Andres, Convent of Las Purisimas (Mazarron's Patron Saint) and the ruins of the Castle Velez are some of the most outstanding buildings. There are a number of towers located outside the Town including Torre Vieja de la Cumbre in the Port, Torre de los Caballos and Torre de Santa Isabel in Bolnuevo.
Out and about: The historic town of Cartagena offers a wonderful array of shops and a wealth of history, with the famous Guns guarding the entrance to Cartagena harbour. The National Park of the Sierra Espuna is close by with the historic villages of Totana and Aldeo along the way. Enjoy a relaxing day out at the thermal baths in Banos de Fortuna and Archena!
Golf is offered on Camposol with a challenging 18 hole course. Further courses at Hacienda del Alamo, Altoreal, Valle Del Este, Desert Springs, Marina Golf and La Manga Golf are all within an hour's drive.
Mazarron is a popular destination with Spanish holidaymakers in the peak months of July and August when the population swells to capacity. At other times of the year it can be very quiet which makes for a relaxing and tranquil holiday exploring the untouched beaches and countryside.
