Before you finally decide whether or not beagle is the right breed for you, you should have considered beagle training. Many dog owners brought home pets on impulse without considering the responsibilities connected with it - the reason why many dogs are abandoned by their owners or are turned over to animal shelters. But dog abandonment, as well as behavior problems can be prevented if a beagle owner is responsible enough to provide the needs of his beagle dog. One important need, of course is beagle training.

Training a dog does not seem to be the easiest thing in the world. Some even gave up on training because of unsuccessful result. But every dog owner ought to bear in mind that beagle training calls for consistency, patience and determination, along with the knowledge of the training tools and methods appropriate for the dog.

Train your beagle with the following commands:

Sit. Sit is the most common and easiest command you can teach your pet. Stand in front of your dog holding a treat in one hand. Hold the treat just above his nose and slowly move it upward. Naturally, the dog will lift his head and lower his rear to the ground. Issue the command "sit" in a clear, firm tone. As soon as his rear touches the ground, give him the treat and praise him excitedly. When you see that your dog is making progress, start to phase out the treats. Praise your dog... a lot when he has mastered the command even without treats.

Stay. Teaching this command is best when your dog has been sitting correctly for a couple of days. With your dog in sitting position, stand directly in front of him. Issue the command "stay" while you hold your hand out in front of you, palm facing out towards your dog's nose. Wait for a second or two and reward your dog for staying. Repeat this process increasing the time and the distance between you and your dog.

Down. Just like when teaching your dog to sit, a reinforcer, either a toy or treat is needed in order to train this command. Hold the toy or treat at your dog's nose level to draw his attention. Once you have his attention, slowly move your hand to the ground between his paws and then move it away from him. Once your dog is laying down completely, give him the toy or the treat along with lots of praise.
