The truth is cats won't obey you. Not the way you think. Cats won't obey you the way a dog would. Any cat behavior problem can't be solved by punishing your cat. In fact that would worsen the problem.
So what will you do ? Well, first of all, you need to check at what level are you with your cat. Whats your current relationship with your cat ? If you punished him severely for not obeying you, by this time he may be quite scared of you and avoid you every time he can. This is not good. You will need to gain the trust of your cat back, and this can be a lengthy process. The first thing you will need to do is stop all physical abuse.
But what about the other end ? If you've done your cat's every wishes. If you've gotten up at night and played with him and gave him attention because he was meowing. If you're giving him attention every time he's meowing and giving him food, and letting him do whatever he wants is not good either. You might not have the respect of your cat this way. You need to show your cat some boundaries, you need to start gaining the respect of your cat.

I had a cat who would come in from outside whenever we called. She always meowed what we believed to be "good morning" when we got downstairs every morning.
Just my personal experience, cats do obey but they do have an attitude.
Great intro - would have liked to see some more solutions in this piece. Marijo (mother of 16 paws who are fairly well behaved with the exception of one ":strong willed" orange tabby - no hope unless I carry the plant water squirter around 24/7. Marijo
