        Tides - A Villanelle

Sailing upon a breeze of happiness,
on endless waves toward love's rocky bay.
The ebbing and flowing of loneliness.

'Tis summer's plea and prayer for tenderness,
where distant, gentle melody doth play.
Sailing upon a breeze of happiness.

Autumn foretells of impending sadness,
of lashing wind, and rain, and darkened day.
The ebbing and flowing of loneliness.

Winter wallows in it's oppressiveness,
light's smile diminished, corroded away.
Sailing upon a breeze of happiness.

Surging spring invades, mischief, playfulness,
dancing, gossiping with so much to say!
The ebbing and flowing of loneliness.

Ancient ocean displaying faitfulness,
in perfect tandem, the seasons obey.
Sailing upon the breeze of happiness,
The ebbing and flowing of loneliness.

The villanelle, one of my favourite forms of poetry, is nineteen lines long (five tercets and one final quatrain) and has only two rhyme sounds. Lines one and three of the first stanza serve as alternate refrains in the third line of following stanza and a couplet in the concluding quatrain.

I have written a few of these poems but "Tides" is a personal favourite, mainly because of the inspiration of the ocean. Hope you enjoy.

Currently studying freelance journalism, Julian is a creative writer and poet and writes both professionally and for pleasure. Professionally, Julian writes articles for an internet marketing company and although he is often restricted by topic, his writing still maintains his own unique style. He has written a series of heartfelt and impartial articles about the success and controversy surrounding the electronic cigarette. He has found the discipline involved with this work to be a great writing exercise and believes it enhances and improves the rest of his writing. Julian's articles at Searchwarp are of a much more personal nature, where he feels he can express his views and interests in the world around him.
