2 turnips peeled and diced

4 medium potatoes scrubbed, diced with skins left on

4 carrots peeled and cut up

1 onion cut up

2 cans chicken broth or 3 bouillon cubes and 3 cups water

1-2 cups frozen cut up okra

1/2 large can tomatoes cut up - put juice in soup too

2 cups cubed ham

1-2 tsp garlic powder

1/2 tsp paprika

red and/or black pepper to taste

cut up fresh parsley (I put in the whole bunch)

1/2 head shredded red cabbage

Cook until the veggies are tender. May thicken with a solution of a couple teaspoons corn starch in water.

This is a filling and robust soup (could be stew if you allow to simmer to desired thickness) with the smoky overtones of the ham mingled with the aromatic cabbage and other more subtle flavors.

We are sitting at 17 degrees and had two inches of snow overnight so I thought a soup recipe might be in order today.  I just made a pot for dinner tonight but whole different recipe. Do some banana bran muffins and you have a complete dinner.

Marijo Phelps was saved by His grace in 1974, from 9 years of professing atheism into His loving arms. She lives with her husband in the middle of a mountain meadow. She is wanting to spread the good news about His redemptive plan for our lives through written media. Her name is pronounced Mary Jo (her dad got cute with the spelling of it). She was an RN for 23+ years, missionary with YWAM then statistical analyst for Every Home for Christ over 9 years. She had her first poem published when she was four years old (her mom might have had more than a little to do with that!) She has been writing ever since.

yep... -  I am definitely praying too, actually with tears today which is not usual for me... I am not allowed to put a URL address here in the comments but if you google Faith Readers
then when it comes up it will give a dialogue box about title.
Click title and put in Nightmares
That should bring it up.

Scriptures and it sure worked for me.

PRAYING

Hello Marijo,

Talk about comfort food. That's a whole potful. For some reason I imagined you sitting in front of a warm fire with a big bowl of it. And singing to Jesus at the same time too!

Thank you.

I make a ham and potatoe soup, Marijo, and it never occurred to me to add tomatoes. Sounds good, except for the okra! :-)

Ah, okra doesn't jump out and bite you when it is mixed with so many other things but if you don't like it this might be ok with green beans or a substitute - there is no wrong soup ingredient really! Marijo

You are most welcome - I have been cooking meals since I was 8 (my mom was sick that year) and am at the point where I try unusual combos - make turkey soup the other day with some normal veggies and a cubed sweet potato - was good! Marijo

I would suggest a different article layout; think of your brief comments ("We are sitting...") as hors d'oeuvres! Repeat your excellent title in the lead sentence and then follow with the "We are sitting..." Next list your ingredients. I might add a brief 1-2 sentence "Bon Appetit" as a conclusion (a dessert!). BTW, the soup and muffins combo "sounds" delicious. Thank you for your contribution.

Thanks - this has been mentioned before and then I get comments back (from the cooks apparently) to leave the format like it is with somments at the bottom so they can print out the recipe (and probably toss the comments) camments are there mainly because of the 150 word minimum - either that or put two recipes in the same piece (which I have also done). Thanks for taking time to give your input! Marijo

Now, I don't have to worry about those cold wintry nights because I have an answer to my usual question, "What do I eat today?" Thanks for your ever helpful scrumptious recipe. I will certainly try this one. Thanks Marijo.

It is different but my hubby loved it enough to have me write it down. I simmer until many of these get to be more of a stew consistency. thank you for your comments - let me know if you make it?! I still have some old recipes from teenage years when we had 250 exchange RNs in Rochester from the PI - chicken adobo, a wonderful stew with chicken, beef, prok and liver in it - need to find those now that I think about it!
