If you're looking for a reasonably priced, quick gateway from the mania that is sometimes Vietnam , take off to Kuala Lumpur , Malaysia . Although not highly regarded as a Mecca for signseeing KL, as it's commonly known, boasts terrific shopping, eating and entertainment

Whether there for an extended holiday or merely a day's layover, some of these are sure to make your trip all the more enjoyable.

Petronnas, those two staggeringly high towers linked by walkways, is the national symbol of Malyasia and is host to hundreds of shops, restaurants, and offices. It also offers a great view of KL if you're lucky enough to be one of the thousand who can score a ticket on the lift. Yes, there are limmited lift rides. Get there early enough and there should be no problem

Menara is the world's 4 th tallest commnication building and hands-down has the most breath-taking, all-encompassing view of KL compared to anywhere else in the city. It's efficiently operated, so there are no long waits once you purchase a ticket (RM60; US$18.50) for the observation deck.

Garnering honorable mentions are two other less visited, yet highly representative points of Malaysian history and culture the National Museum (entry fee RM2; US$0.60) and The National Independence Monument (free)

The National Museum easily explains how Malaysia came to be an independent entity.

Though a conservative, mainly Muslim nation, Malaysia 's capital offers a high level of bar life for the thirsty traveller.

The Reggae bar in Chinatown is like stepping into Kingstown , jamaica . Decorated in yellow, red, and green, Bob Marley's face is plastered everywhere. Pub food is served along with beer and spirits all day long.

In the city centre, mostly on Bukit Bintang, there is a string of bars. The ones that really stand out are The Green man, Al-Bait, and a hidden gem that not many know, The Hip Pub.

The Green Man is a British pub and restaurant known for its pints and authentic cuisine. They serve breakfast all day long. Al-bait is located beside the Green Man and is wonderfully cosy, with an Arabian vibe. Sweeing-tasting shishas are available, along with strong Arab coffee and delicious hummus.

Malaaysian food is not as ubiquitous in the West as Chinese or even Japanese; there's no reason why this should be so.

Beef and chicken satay are main Malaysian fare. Great satay can be had from the street vendors and outdoor eating markets. One restaurant deserving an acknowledgement is Restoran Chinatown Pavallion. The buy two big Tiger beer, get a baby Beer free' is their drawing point, but their food is cheap and delicious. The sweet and sour chicken and the crashew chicken are recommended.

Khalid's Curry House is a local hangout across from Times Squre. They serve ip manuy varieties of curries along with chicken, lamb or vegetables. It's another inexpensive and delicious choice

Most people who go to KL stay in three five star hotels, but if you happened to want a cheap stay, Backpacker's travellers Inn is the place to go. Friendly staff, respectfully quiet hallways, internet access, and a rooftop bar are all draws to this inexpensive home away from home.

Those with more time on their hands will likely get out of the city for a trip to the idyllic countryside but those pressed for time in the big smoke will still find plenty of ways of filling their time
