I woke during the night with the phrase "What's on the inside changes the outside." I've no idea what produced this thought, possibly a dream that vanished on awakening. In any case, I've learned when something like this happens I need to write it down, rather than wait until morning to explore it further. Experience has taught me it will be gone by morning. Here are some of the thoughts and ideas that exploring this phrase have produced.
We all have much more control of our material (outside) world than most of us are aware of. Thoughts have much more power than most of us are willing to acknowledge. When you wake up in the morning feeling like it's going to be a bad day, you are nearly always guaranteed that it will be.
Have you ever tried picturing a parking spot exactly where you would like it to be? Try it a few times. I think you'll be surprised how often it works.
Ever noticed how quickly your mood can darken when around someone who is constantly complaining about, or lamenting something? Personally, I believe a negative attitude is much more contagious than a positive one. Even so, a positive attitude also has a contagious quality. Try this: for one day make it a point to smile at, and maybe offer a friendly Hello' to everyone you come in contact with, and observe what happens. At the very least I think you will end the day feeling good.
Now, don't get me wrong. I understand there is clinical depression, a valid medical diagnosis, and I understand that "thinking positive thoughts" may not make a lot of difference if you have clinical depression. This is something that is caused by little understood chemical imbalances in our neurological system. Again, something on the inside. Medication is generally a valid option. But, even with clinical depression your thoughts can have an impact. It just may take more effort on your part, and produce less dramatic results.
None of these recommendations will produce "instant, magic results," (although now and again they may seem to.) Consistently noticing your thoughts and words, changing them to something positive when needed will, over time, produce a much happier you. You'll probably also find much of your outside' will improve too.
Joyce has been writing for her own enjoyment for many years, and only in the past few years has gained the courage to "go public" with her writing. She has had two books published, and is involved with the Fine Lines magazine as a special editor. Her writing primarily reflects her own experiences, or the life experiences she has observed in others. She has her own blog, Joyce's Ramblings at http//joyce-wwwnewbyblogger.com.blogspot.com Joyce would like to add that she always welcomes constructive criticism comments.
Nice writing, Joyce. You are so right -- our inner thoughts definitely change our outer world much of the time. And it works both ways, for better or for worse. It may be hard for me to follow up on thinking this way all the time, but when I can summon up the effort, it generally does help.
