My niece decided to buy a hamster. Of course when you buy a hamster, you have to buy a cage, water bottle, toys and well, you get the picture. She was all set for her new pet.

My niece Paula was enjoying her pet hamster until one day

The hamster died.

Paula's boyfriend immediately came to her aid and buried the poor little hamster in Paula's back yard.

Economic times being what they are, Paula decided to return the cage, water bottle, toys, and hamster food.

My Hamster died. Can I bring these items back? She asked the cashier at Wal-Mart.

Of course. Did you say your hamster died?

Yes.

Where is your hamster now?

My boyfriend buried it ..Its in the back yard.

Well, why don't you also bring your hamster back in and get your money back?

Paula, in a state of shock said that she would think about it.

When she telephoned her boyfriend and told him that Wal-Mart would take the hamster back, he said that he would dig up the hamster for her.

Next day, Paula brought back the hamster and got her money back.

This is a true story. I swear.

That's hilarious.

I have to agree, I've never had any trouble returning anything there. But I've never dug up a dead animal to give them, either.

I'm glad your niece got her money back. ;-)

I almost had problems returning a printer cartridge - the yellow color didn't work on the very frist try... but they decided to take it even though their policy is not to take returned ink jet cartridges - I didn't use it up it was a mfg defect. Marijo

Hi Fran.

Wow. Seems kind of crazy to me, but then that's Walmart for you. Even so, it seems to me that they have tightened up their return policy in recent years. Still, taking back a dead animal seems ... I don't know ... risky. Decomposition and all that entails is pretty messy. And what are they going to do with it? Your niece gave it a nice burial and sent its little soul on its way to heaven. Why dig it up? But that's just my take on it.

Thanks for sharing,
Dianne

Fran, Wow! What a story. Guess the cliche' "Truth is stranger than fiction" applies here. :)

I've never had an issue returning anything at Walmart either, however, I do know of some who take advantage of their lax return policy. I've known of people wearing shoes for almost a year, then returning because they were wore out! Walmart actually took them back, but I just thought it was ridiculous of the customer to do it in the first place.

I think that is totally dishonest, even though WalMart is willing to take it back. Shame on them!

hi fran,

that's a great story.

i love our wal-mart.

it is an easy return policy, and it usually has everything i need-in one store!

i don't know where your niece is, but in our county, it's against the law to bury an animal,pet...the vet is supposed to get rid of it. (shh...we've buried all of hours and the vet believes in being able to do so , so he gives your pet back to you.)

for a charge, of course.

thanks for sharing,

my best to you,

sue

My niece loves potted plants and buys them at Wal-Mart. She waters them but for some reason the plants usually die (she is not a green-thumb kind of a person). She returns them and gets a refund. Great article Fran. Thanks for sharing. ~Nenita~

Enjoyed your story. I have to agree with the other person who said the truth is stranger than fiction. Thanks for the laugh. Linda D
