Are you looking for a new hobby? Yes, you do know that an herb garden will deliver not only flowers but also edible crops and even much more, but just saying "gardening" brings out a yawn from you? Well, before you pass this by to consider another hobby, how does an "Italian herb garden" sound to you instead?

Does that not bring on a vision of an exotic place on that remote enchanted hillside where the scents, sights and sounds make you sit up and think again?

Maybe, but what is an Italian herb garden? What are itsfeatures and benefits? What's so special about it that you should choose it for your hobby at this time in my life?

Well, in the space permitted and without going into too much detail, an Italian herb garden is:

* An ornamental garden which is designed to be a refuge from the hustle and bustle of the outside world you may have just come in from.

* A garden filled with exotic Mediterranean herb plants that envelop your senses as you sit or walk amongst its beautiful and aromatic herb plants.

* A place where the maintenance required of you is nothing more than a joy as you potter amongst the herb plants and engaging in their epic journeys from seeds to when you can admire and then eat them!

* A private refuge where you can pick your choice of scent to bring indoors when used in herb arrangements around the house or even in your clothes drawers to make your clothing smell good.

* And last but not least, it's a place that provides an ever available supply of healing herbs for:

    • that soothing cup of herbal tea to relax your body and mind,
    • that tincture to put you to sleep,
    • those poultices that relieve your uncomfortable ailments and
    • even that aloe plant which you snip a bit off to apply to that accidental burn you just got in the kitchen.
* Can you think of any more?

The most visual feature of an Italian herb garden is its geometric shape that sets it up with a formal look and feel. This design incorporates an inspired yet practical passageway for accessible enjoyment and importantly, the maintenance it needs to keep its design basically intact.

The plants you have included are chosen for their exquisite foliage and their exceptional aromatic scents that blend into that overall intoxicating fragrance that is unique to your own Italian herb garden and no where else. Wow.

If you are ready to create your Italian herb garden then go outside and find that level piece of ground that is suitable for that Italian herb garden that is inside your head right now.

It needs to be in a sunny spot that receives sunshine all year round. The environment should be as hot and dry as you can make it.

Critically, its soil needs to be well drained and not soaking wet even after rain has fallen. To help ensure this, lay a layer of gravel and sharp sand before topping up with soil for planting.

You are now ready to originate your very own Italian herb garden.

Hi Shad,

I wouldn't mind trying a cup of the herbal occasionally, but gardening isn't really my cup of tea. Still an interesting read, thanks for sharing.

Ben.
