National adoption week 9th to15th November 2009 – Why is there still 4.000 children in care waiting to be adopted when there are so many childless couples looking to adopt a child. Could the reason be them without kids, and who want them haven't a clue about what's involved with adoption or who to turn too about these children who need a loving home, of which they have this to give. We had many childless couples who did admit to procrastinating over making that all time important decision purely because of this. These same people grew old together mulling over what might have been (having a family).

National adoption week is nearing where you'll find all the advice and guidance you need on becoming parents to an orphaned child who is looking for love and cuddles. Babies put into care are not there of their own choosing and through no fault of their own, there only babies remember. If you can give a lonely child company, and the love of a parent and a roof over their head then what are you waiting for? Procrastination will most likely have you see your hair turn grey and then it will be too late. Why wait for particular dates (9th to 15th November 2009.)There is no time like the present.

About Adoption

Just the thought of adopting a child must be a wonderful feeling for you and your partner. Making room for a child in your life and giving them a loving home is not only an amazing thing to do, but one that the child when all grown up, will love and respect you even more. Nonetheless it is big decision to take someone (a stranger if you like) under your wing. While you may believe there's nothing you can't handle when it comes to bringing up, and mothering or fathering another's child as your own – there are things you need to know and learn about.

Why adopt? Why not I ask? If you can't have children of your own and want a family and you're in a position to provide a happy environment for a child in care, and the child needs a mom and dad then why is this question asked. Nevertheless some people will want this question answering for other reasons.  Most obvious reason for adopting a child is not being able to have a baby yourself. Why adopt? Most children in care are placed there because they can no longer be brought up by their birth parents. Once again there are various reasons for this which falls into many categories - like losing their parents, suffering abuse or other. Questions of this nature (why they are in care) will be given by them in charge of the adoption process. Information on a child's background is never openly discussed unless adoption of a particular child you have taken interest in is underway.

When a couple adopts a child (whatever age) they take on all legal rights and responsibilities for the child's upbringing and well being. It is a lifelong commitment and, like all parenting duties you have to take the bad with the good. This comes with all families which simply mean sticking with it.

Can anyone adopt? Yes as long as they pass certain legal requirements, which is expected and proper order if you ask me. Not every couple that fills out an application to become adoptive parents is successful. This does not mean they are bad people, in fact quite the opposite. Things linked to health are a major issue that can give cause for an application for adoption denied. People with a back ground history involving social services and kids getting hurt will be shown the door, or better still a cell door.

The adoption agency in charge of an adoption will help match every child to the right family taking into account the child's emotional health and the child's development needs and wants. People on the inside will do their best in giving a child to a family that reflects their ethnic identity as closely as possible. Whatever the color of your skin be it black white or yellow everyone is eligible and considered to adopt a child. And I say rightly so because, everyone is equal regardless of the color of their skin. The color of a person's skin doesn't make one person better at loving a child than any other. Black skinned moms, yellow skinned moms or white skinned moms all have that quality that women have when they become a mother, and that is to protect their young and love them for as long as they can. We all love the same so no excuse to judge someone by the color of their skin. Please don't be that couple who procrastinate because they are slightly more tanned than others. I raised this issue after having someone ask me is it right for white people to adopt a black baby, or a black person adopt a white baby. It's not about right; it's about doing the right thing for the sake of the child. Madonna and Angelina Jolie are prime examples of the black and white issue that some people see a problem. I believe if a child is happy then that is all that matters, end of.

Adoption Advice

You have to be over 21. Have patience, and be flexible and energetic. The adoption agency will most likely be looking at how determined you are about becoming parents and that you can as a couple positively transform a child's life.

Honesty is the best policy so if you have any convictions against you tell the adoption agency.

There will be no acceptations or considerations by the adoption agency if you hold a criminal record for child abuse and child neglect.

It's sad in a lot of those cases where couples grew old together and childless because of lack of awareness. A lot of people also denied themselves parenthood because they believed the untruths they heard which involved who could and couldn't adopt a child. I know it's no use crying over spilt milk but all you had to do is ask any questions you needed answering yourself, instead of allowing others sway you from making that all important decision which would change yours and a parentless child's future forever. Take heed of this any couple looking to adopt a child.

Thankfully not everyone believes in untruths and myths and rear a beautiful adopted son or daughter who they love dearly as their own, and find the love is reciprocated a 100 times over.

Myths about Adoption

  • You have to own your home
  • You have to have a job
  • You have to be 40 years of age to adopt a child.
  • You have to be married or be in a relationship
  • You have to be a mom or dad already
  • A disability is not necessarily an obstacle to adopting (nonetheless depending on the disability)

There are no real required specifications other than you offering a loving home to a child in care.

Is there any support? Yes there's plenty of support for adoptive parents. You are not handed a child and left to your own devises. All the help you need is there for you. Adoptive families usually always look for assistance at the start of theirs and the child's beginning together. Support includes advice and information, counseling, financial support and help with getting benefits. Just like biological parents, you will have to contribute towards the general costs of raising a child. But hey what's an extra a few bob to see a child's face content from filling their belly when their hungry, and smile when their new mom and dad puts on their new shoes to keep their feet warm, but there's nothing beats that grateful hug and sloppy kisses you get when you present them with a dolly or a ball.
