As we are all well aware the H1N1/Swine Flu has been all over the media. This is a virus that we all hope does not hit our families. Doctors across the nation are recommending that patients get the vaccine as soon as it becomes available.

Chapel Hill Tubal Reversal Center has just written a post on the tubal reversal blog about the H1N1/Swine flu and why women who are pregnant or trying to conceive should get the vaccine. One of the most alarming facts is that a person can get both the H1N1/Swine flu and the seasonal flu at the same time. I cannot even imagine how bad this could be.

The virus seems to be hitting both pregnant women and children especially hard. I was recently reading an article on how many pregnant women are choosing not to get the vaccine. It has been proven with the seasonal flu vaccine that if the mother gets vaccinated while pregnant the fetus builds up an immunity thus making it safer after birth. An infant cannot be vaccinated for the flu until after three months of age.

A recent news release by the HHS showed that pregnant women receiving the H1N1 had a dramatic rise in immunity toward the virus. The H1N1 vaccine has been well tolerated by the individuals receiving the single dose. This is good news as we have already had 28 deaths of pregnant women here in the United States.

If a woman chooses to get the vaccine she not only chooses to protect herself but her child. Newborns have little immunity except for what is passed to them by the mother. This is not counting the fact if the mother contracts this virus while she is still pregnant. High fevers have been known to cause problems with the developing fetus. And if the mother is not well her immune system is already stressed due to being pregnant and this alone can make her more susceptible to getting sick.

Will you be getting the vaccine? If not, could you share the reasons? We are all trying to learn what is the best thing to do.

Thanks for sharing your info, Debra. I am uncomfortable with the H1N1 vaccine. There seem to be too many unknowns. As one with an autoimmune disorder, I won't be getting the shot.
