Have you ever considered toilet training cats ? I know what you mean. For the longest time I never thought I'd be able to train my cat to use the toilet.

Fear not. It can be done . Cat's can and do learn behavioral changes. But, the process should be slow and gradual.

What is involved when toilet training cats?

Consider the following steps:

1. Make sure you remember to keep your toilet seat down and the lid up.

2. Place the litter box next to your toilet and keep it there until your cat regularly does his business at the new location for about a week. If your cat is not receptive to using the litter box in the bathroom initially, try moving the box halfway between the old location and the bathroom.

3. Begin to raise the height of the litter box ever so slightly until it reaches the height of your toilet. You can use old telephone books or newspapers as support. Once again, do not raise the litter box until your cat has successfully used it at the new height for about a week.

4. Replace the litter box with a litter pan that fits under your toilet seat. These are available at most pet stores. Fill the pan with some cat litter. While your cat is now used to jumping up at that level, you might have to place him on the pan for awhile. As your cat gets used to doing his business in the pan, you can eliminate sections of the bottom of the pan and finally the entire pan. Voila, your cat is using the toilet.

Make sure you follow these directions or you'll likely be dealing with the mess and smell of a dirty litter box for years to come.

Now that we've covered the basics of, let's get into the advantages and details. Go to http://www.squidoo.com/toilet_training_cats for more details

You haven't met my cats, have you? (I wonder if this would work but with 4 house cats it might get interesting trying - I am covering my eyes here) Marijo

Yeah, you're right. These steps usually work with only one cat at a time and where training is not interrupted. Stick with the litter box.
