ALTERNATIVE MEDICINES MAKING A COMEBACK. 1/15/05 Written by: Dr. Anthony Murphy ND, PhD European Naturopath Doctor and Health Writer.
Have you noticed the many drug recall and warning’s on TV lately?
Seems that many so-called ‘safe drugs’ are causing some terrible even fatal side effects.
The FDA monitoring of the drug companies seems to be something less than desired.
With so much medical aid needed what safe natural alternatives could be used?
Socrates once said. “There is only one good, knowledge, and one evil, ignorance." To many people do not have the slightest idea of the natural medical alternatives there are to the OTC and prescription drugs.
Over the next few articles, I will spell out some of the ‘old time reliable, safe herbs and other natural alternatives’. These could prove to be extremely beneficial for many health problems and also for preventative measures. I tell my patients and clients, “It’s much better to prevent a problem than try to fix it later." Some of the ‘old fashioned cures’ you’ll find in your cupboard at home. This vital information will be from many alternative health practitioners and research information.
Quoting from the book: The Natural Physicians Healing Therapies, by Mark Stengler, N.D. “ Our bodies are infinitely complicated, elaborately designed arrangements of living tissues, organs, and a myriad (of) other substances that all function together in ways that can never be explained in “mechanical" terms-precisely because we are living, breathing human beings. Our bodies are genetically designed to be compatible with healing substances as found in nature. When helping people stay at the peak of good health, or recover from illness, a physician can’t just treat one organ, one set of tissues, or one aching joint. The whole person deserves attention, since all the living parts of that person are so intricately related." Incidentally I recommend getting this book for your library.
Let’s start with common herbs. Listed in alphabetical order.
ALFALFA: Alfalfa is a deep-rooted plant that has the ability to assimilate the trace minerals in the soil. It also contains a wealth of vitamins and minerals and has been called ‘the poor man’s vitamin’. It contains the eight digestive enzymes and also the eight essential amino acids. This is one of my favorites for detoxification of the body and helping the body to then possibly become pain free from the aches and pains caused by the body being out of balance. It alkalizes the total body reducing toxic acids. It is also An excellent diuretic, lowers cholesterol, balances hormones and contains an antifungerside agent. This is my favorite for anemia and bleeding related disorders.
ALOE VERA: There are over 300 varieties of aloe plants. It can be used topically or internally. For topical use it smoothes the skin, reduces healing time if you have any type of sunburn or other burns or wound healing. It prevents blistering. Note: Always get the high concentration of aloe gel (80% or higher). When taken internally, the juice has many (2) healing properties. Digestive ailments such as ulcers and inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) benefit and it’s been known to help heal arthritis, diabetes, constipation and to expel worms. Also good for AIDS.
ANGELICA: German researchers discovered this herb many years ago. They claim it relaxes the windpipe, consequently makes it useful for asthma and many other respiratory ailments such as colds or flu.
Drinking two cups daily, using the powder or leaves. Let it steep for 20 minutes after boiling the water. If you don’t like the somewhat bitter taste, add honey or lemon.
ANISE: Folk healers have used and recommended this good tasting herb also for asthma, coughs and bronchitis long before you and I were born. Anise is an expectorant containing nutrients that help loosen bronchial secretions. Most people have this herb in their cupboard. It promotes milk production in nursing mothers.
