In every walk of life there are individuals addicted to gambling. Gambling has been a form of entertainment since the beginning of time.
Today gambling establishments have created a world with in a world of beauty and elegance to entice all walks of people to enter their establishments. They cater to all income levels with slots machines that you can play for a penny. These Casinos do not discriminate, if you have money they are willing to take it.
The Casinos do not twist your arm to get you there they use subtle subliminal approach to affect your senses. The show tunes commercials, sponsoring local events, donating to revitalization zones and charities. What people don’t realize is they are doing all this with your money. The money has to come from somewhere.
Someone you know convinces to celebrate a friend’s birthday at the new technological advance futuristic night club at the Casino. Not only do they have the best night clubs, they can also afford the best entertainment like Cher, Olivia Newton John, major sports events, charitable fund raisers and much more. How ever they got you there once you put your first coin in the slot machines, play Black Jack, Poker, roulette, horse racing and more, this the hook. Once the hook is in some people are able to escape others are not. The unfortunate ones go down self destructive path that seems impossible to ever escape from. Besides the mounting debt, their self esteem decreases as each day passes. The compulsive gambler is trapped. They know gambling is no good for them, they try to stop but all they want is that big win. It doesn’t matter what you bet on the feeling are still the same.
I have known gamblers to put thousands of dollars in a slot machine believing it will turn around. It very rarely does, but just suppose the gambler hits a thousand dollars. The gambler feels great and now thinks there’s nothing they can’t do. They don’t care that they sat at that slot machine for three hours, didn’t want to leave to use the rest room nor meet you’re their friends for lunch. Then with out realizing it an hour later they lost the money. They decided to go home and ask themselves hoe. If this has happened to you, a friend and or relative there’s a problem. The problem needs to be faced head on.
How did this happen? You took the bait and were caught by the hook. For some reason the lights, sounds and excitement of a Casino is able to penetrate a person’s subconscious mind and throw out all rational thought.
There are millions and millions of people who never had one drink of alcohol which eliminated them from having an alcohol addiction. There are cases know that a young adult going into college and wants to join specific clubs have to undergo certain initiations. Once of them is to dink alcohol injected into an orange or grapefruit. The lived their life up until was alcohol free. If there parents knew they would be upset. The bottom line here is they were exposed. A majority would be okay but there would be a few that would become addicted based on statistics. This may be life’s many tests to see if people are strong enough to overcome any situation.
Everyone understands that if you were to flip the same coin ten thousand times, heads probable would be 50% and tales 50%. A gambler would still place bets hoping that heads comes out more times then tales. They have this magic ability to predict when in reality they lose more times then they win.
How many times is a gambler up $500.00 in the first two hours, they feel good and they’re having the time of their life. Luck is on their side, so they decide to play some more. Two hours pass in a blink of an eye, and now they’re down $100.00. If they are like most people they are shocked that they lost the money they had just won. They thought about what they were going to buy for a friend or relative. Gamblers are very free with their money as long as they’re winning. If they are losing after they have been up for awhile irrational thoughts take over and they do things they wouldn’t normally do if they were sober. Then to make things worse they go to the cash machine to get another $200.00. They use their charge card to get the cash not caring that the casino is now charging them a large fee to get more money even though, the odds are you will not take home. You don’t really care about the fees you just want to get back to play. I always questioned why a casino would charge a 10% fee to borrow money off of your credit card. Most bank atm cards have a $350.00 limit for cash. Other credit cards let you take cash but the interest rat is outrageous.
The hook is in and the gambler seeks for a way out. A gambler’s mind thinks differently then others. They believe if they win two weeks in a row then lose five weeks in a row they can come back strong. They get themselves more into debt and show signs of self destructive behavior.
This is when family and friends need to take notice. If an addiction is caught early enough recovery really accelerates at a rapid pace. Those that quit when they have lost all their resources have more issues to deal with so recovery seems more painful then it should be. In reality recovery can become a very rewarding. The gambler gets to learn more about themselves, realizes the self destructive behavior, reestablishes friendships lost and most of all becomes financially sound again. Gamblers are talented people they just put their energy in the wrong direction. Once they realize what has happened to them, they refocus and strive to be better people.
