The Path to becoming a Webmaster by Jose Valdez

When someone decides to become a webmaster, they may soon will realize that there are certain
skills and knowledge that they must posses. The path to acquiring this skill and knowledge
can vary from situation to situation. However, unlike becoming a doctor or lawyer, for example,
there are different ways to become a webmaster. We discuss a few of them in this article.

What is a webmaster anyway?

Simply put, a webmaster is the person responsible for maintaining, updating and also creating a website(s).
He or she may also be responsible for the promotion of the website by various means such as
advertising and search engine optimization.

Why become a webmaster?

There are many benefits to becoming a webmaster. Some of the benefits are that there are employment
opportunities across the world, many webmasters are self-taught, although it helps to have formal education,
it's not neccessary and you have the opportunity to work for yourself

What you need to become a webmaster

The skills neccessary to be a webmaster vary from situation to situation, however, the
basic skill-set in a somewhat in-depth knowledge of: x/html, css, javascript, xml, web design and
graphics softwars and at least some knowledge of server side languages such as php, asp, and/or sql.

Path to becoming a webmaster

These a few basic ways to become a webmaster:

You can be self-taught. If you are self disciplined enough, you can learn the skills neccessary on
your own. There are countless books and online tutorials available that will teach you, at little
or no financial costs. If you go this route, you will build a few websites and/or volunteer your skills to
non-profit, charitable causes or things of that nature. This will help you get "real world" experience.

You can go to school, either college or technical schools which provide certifications.
The quality of teaching at these institutions can vary significantly.
If you decide to go this route, be sure to invest some time in researching the program that you're
interested in and hearing what ex-students and employers of these students have to say.

If you're lucky, you can essentially fall into the position by helping to maintain, update
and create sites at your place of work. This will of course still require you to take the
initiative to learn the skills neccessary and you may have to do some of the work on your
own time.

Possibly the best option, is to start a business and/or work for yourself. This is also the most difficult.
The reality is that there are some online businesses that allow their owners to make a
decent amount of money.

Once you feel that you have the skills neccessary to be a webmaster, there is nothing
keeping you from starting a career as a webmaster or starting your online business.
