So your bathroom needs a makeover, does it? When it comes to a bathroom “redo" there is so much to think about. There’s the bathtub, the toilet, the sink, the vanity, the taps, the shower, and the flooring. These things don’t conjure up images of fun, do they? Not really. So the question remains- is there a fun part when it comes to bathroom renovation?

You bet! That’s the good news in all of this. You need to first ask yourself what kind of look you want for your bathroom, keeping in mind that there are many. What do your personal tastes lean towards? What do you like?

Do you want the clean and simple look, with standard white fixtures, chrome metal finishes and basic tile in a neutral color? In other words something nice but nondescript, not a lot of personality but undoubtedly a bathroom that will keep everyone in the household happy?

If you choose to go this route, you can liven it up with touches of colors, in the form of towels, washcloths, and accessories such as a snazzy soap dish and toothbrush holder. Also your choice of shower curtains is crucial. Consider going with a pretty, muted color such as pink, soft yellow or lavender. The softness of these colors helps to create an elegant and uncluttered looking room, which is what you want to convey. And shower curtains have a way of standing out in a bathroom when they are opened up, so your choice of one color over an other, matters.

But what if you are someone who is a little more daring? Someone who is willing to take a chance on being different? If that describes you then we have plenty to talk about!

The bathroom is one room where you can definitely afford to show your own brand of individuality. You can choose to make it whatever you want it to be. Don’t be afraid to be adventurous and creative. Let loose and be bold!

So how would you like to decorate your bathroom? There are so many different themes to choose from. What’s your favorite?

Do you love the beach? Enjoy seaside vacations? If that describes you then consider an ocean theme. Paint the walls in shades of the sea. Install a ceramic floor that looks like sand and add ocean creatures (or whatever your imagination can dream up!) for wall decorations.

Instead of using regular towels, use funky beach towels. If you want to go a step further, drape the ceiling with a fishing net, making sure to be careful around light fixtures and exhaust fans. Replace your ordinary looking cabinet handles with some new metal or glass fish ones. There are also seahorse handles on the market that are very appealing to the eye.

Once you’ve got it all set up you can lie back in your bathtub for a relaxing soak and for extra effect, play a CD of sounds of the ocean. Suddenly you will really feel as if you are on a beach in Tahiti! What could be more relaxing after a long, hard day at the office then that?

Or what about the clean black and white look? It’s another theme you might want to consider. Use a checkerboard style of ceramic floor, the standard white fixtures, a black granite countertop, sleek chrome metal finishes and lots of mirrors and glass. Then for that added splash, add colors. Add bright red, shocking yellow, clear turquoise, bright orange, vibrant purple, or hot pink. Buy a shower curtain, valances, bath mat, toilet seat cover and wall art in one of these color schemes. The contrast between the colors will be very striking, and it will undoubtedly be a conversation piece for your guests.

What about another kind of bathroom theme? How about going with a French country theme, using clean and clear blues and yellow with white? Sound inviting? I think so. It is a calming theme for a bathroom but with a dash of class.

Consider an antique washstand for your vanity with a countertop sink bowl that sits on top of the washstand. Make a trip to your local antique shop or used furniture store and buy an antique picture frame for your standard mirror in your bathroom.

Use some of the new reproduction handles in burnished brass and copper finishes. And don’t forget the antique-style toilets and my personal favorite, the tubs. There are still several fixture manufacturers that sell antique-style soaker tubs and toilets that have been fashioned after the real thing. Do your homework in the area where you live. Many local manufacturers should be able to direct your inquiry to the proper place.

Don’t forget the accessories and little extras that really pull the room, and the theme of the room, together. Add lots of fresh or silk flowers, a plate rail around the room or strategic shelves and use antique plates or start your own collection of interesting and unusual antique items. Other items such as stuffed animals, old toys, posters or signs would also do the trick and help set the stage for your unique bathroom theme.

There are so many types of themes you could use and so many different ideas to employ when deciding to give your bathroom a makeover. It’s important to be creative but most importantly to go with the look that makes you happy. This is your space after all. Treat it right and make it all it can be!
