Color affects our moods. It is everywhere in the food we eat, the clothes we wear and in our living and working environment. Some colors make us feel relaxed and serene. Others lift our spirits and energize our minds. This has to do with the intensity of the colors around us. Shades and tints influence our mind and emotions.

Orange is a friendly, cheerful, happy color that’s associated with thirst, refreshment and energy. It gives a sense of order and equality without control or power. Orange relieves depression and inspires intestinal and respiratory health. It is bold while decreasing hostility and irritability. Orange is a social color that has a jovial, fickle, active and extroverted side and is often used in businesses that promote socialization and fun.

White indicates purity, innocence, youth, naiveté, and cleanliness. It has a stark, sterile personality. At one time hospitals used white in abundance. Today, white is associated with sterilization and is used far less in institutions. White is a great color for trim, borders and ceilings, but unless you’re looking for a bleak, hygienic look, it’s best not to use it on walls. If you do, break it up with a more vibrant of relaxing color, like those in the red or green spectrums.

Brown brings warmth, comfort and solidarity into your home. It has a positive association with food, due to its relationship to the orange family. Brown is suitable for any room in your house, as it is evokes less intense behavioral responses. It signifies the Earth, humility, stability and dependability. It’s considerate, conventional and sophisticated. It relaxes and gives you the feeling of coming home and encourages the feeling of stability while it alleviates insecurity. It is associated with comfort, nurturing and fertility.

Red is a flamboyant color. It stimulates the appetite, attracts attention, creates excitement, raises blood pressure and takes control of a room. It is energetic, bold, aggressive, forceful, extreme and impulsive. Red suggests passion, love, sensuousness, danger, vitality, physical strength, self confidence, courage, danger and rejuvenation. It is the first color that the eye sees upon awakening. It can overcome negative thoughts. It is associated with vitality and ambition. Red is also associated with anger and irritability, so don’t overdo it. If used in moderation, it is the perfect color to turn your bedroom into a cozy love nest.

Green gives the sense of relaxation and comfort. It refreshes the spirit while representing health and prosperity. Green is the most liked color in the world and one of the easiest on the eye. It suggests balance, birth, envy, harmony, replenishment, moderation, security, rejuvenation, moderation and health of the heart. Green is compatible with a wide variety of colors and gives a sense of tranquility and well being. It’s a great choice for any room and can be used in contrasting shades. If you are looking for a color that gives the cozy feeling of home, put green at the top of your list.

Yellow stimulates memory and mental clarity. It creates feelings of optimism, cheerfulness and brightness. It inspires warmth and wisdom, while lifting our spirit. Yellow aids circulation and digestion, but can signal caution and frustration. It is the most difficult color for the eye to process and see. Use yellow sparingly when decorating, or use a very pale shade.

Black suggests elegance, sophistication, dignity, power, intimidation, worldliness, and mystery. Black can bring charm, class, grace and splendor into your home. It can add just the right amount of contrast if used on trim in a room with white or light gray walls.

Gray lacks assertiveness, but suggests a sense of discipline, intelligence and guarded behavior. It can be calming and add both elegance and sophistication to a room if trimmed with black.

Purple adds an element of surprise and magic to your home. It suppresses the appetite and adds romance, imagination, and magic to any room. Purple is the color of royalty. It fosters wisdom, reverence, love, inspiration, and spirituality, while giving a sense of quietness and solitude, restfulness, serenity, satisfaction and calmness. Purple eases the mind and calms overactive glands, while conveying artistic creativity and elegance. It’s the perfect color for a meditation room or art studio. It will also work well in other rooms where creativity is taking place, such as hobby or sewing rooms.

Blue is a symbol of trust and longevity. It is soothing, dependable, and calm refreshes the soul. It helps to alleviate headaches, and indigestion while slowing metabolism and lowering blood pressure. It acts as an anti inflammatory and aids insomnia. Blue is the color of power and authority. It is associated with travel and leisure. It is the most popular home decorating color in the United States and signifies peace, healing, water and sleep. Use blue in any room in your house for a calming affect.
