As a first time mom of a girl, I have become fascinated lately with baby hairstyles. It seems everywhere I turn there is some new do that makes me just exclaim in that womanly (I want) voice, “That is so cute!" However, it is not just girls that catch people’s eyes, but those cute baby boys can be just as stylin’.

The trick to styling your baby’s hair is to not distract from his or her own cuteness. Babies are naturally cute, so whatever hairstyle you pick, it must complement the already present cuteness. So here is a list on the in styles for the 21st century sure to get your baby some much desired extra attention from everyone on the street.

Boys: Spiky hair

There is nothing cuter than a little mini-man. Boys look adorable with the rugged spiked look. The spiky hair look is an easy way to style your little baby’s hair. Apply a little gel while pulling the hair up from the scalp. This is great for boys with little hair because it gives the appearance of more hair.

Boys: Retro hair
The long look is in, and why should it be any different with babies? The Bad News Bear look is back in and baby boys tend to have no trouble pulling this off. However, I do not suggest this look if you are easily offended. People might mistake your “super cool" baby as a girl. This look also does not do well with curls. My suggestion is to cut the curls to allow for some new growth. The look is a straight haired look with the hair falling at the shoulders.

Girls: Pigtails

This is my favorite. Pigtails scream cuteness! My daughter can have her pigtails in and people will cross the street to comment. The trick is not how much hair they have, because my daughter does not have tons. But I part her hair down the middle, leaving the bangs out, then form two ponytails. For those wishing to grow the bangs out-you can pull them back as well. The pigtails are also located mostly on top of her head. The hair in the back is combed down and never even noticed. Add matching bows and she will be the talk of the store.

Girls: Ponytail on top
The list for girl baby hairstyles is endless, adding an extra dose of adorable with all the accessories. So say your girl has that extra long strand of hair that is growing down her face. All the while the rest of her hair is slowly trying to catch up. My suggestion: put her hair in a ponytail on top of her head. Add an adorable bow and poof-she is the latest talk. The look will bring out her beautiful eyes since you forgot what they looked like while they were covered in hair.

Girls: Traditional cut
If she refuses to keep the ponytail in, she will quickly become scary unicorn head. You know the look. The one where the hair got used to being up, but now there is nothing to hold it in place so her hair looks as if it is poking straight out from her forehead. It is ok to have a first haircut and just get bangs cut. The baby will transform right before your eyes and look like that little girl that you know she is becoming (too quickly, I might add).

Girls: Clipped to one side

There is nothing more sophisticated then having a baby’s hair pulled to one side and clipped. It allows others to see their beautiful eyes and face once again. It also gives them a more mature look. This look is achieved just as it sounds. You take the hair that is too long or close to her eyes and pull it to one side. Then place the barrette or clip.

Girls: No hair
Tired of them mistaking your precious baby for a boy? The great thing about girls is the accessories. You can use toothpaste to hold a bow on her head. Also, as my husband affectionately calls them, brain squeezers are hot items. You can get bands of various sizes and looks to bring out your baby’s best features.

So no matter what look you are trying, the key is to do a look that the baby is comfortable with. If they don’t mind a lot of fuss, enjoy the time you have. Before long, they will not even want your opinion, much less let you near their hair. So get creative and bring out their natural cuteness!

What?! There was aboy in it! I have a boy and a girl....it is harder to find styles for a girl than a little boy. Don't be so negative!

Are you kidding?!  Do you have nothing better to do than complain about a baby hairstyle article being sexist?  Some people have way to much time on their hands!  I thought the article was great!  Thanks for sharing your tips and ideas!

Thank you so much, I am a new Mom to a almost 2 year old girl whose hair is thin and curly but I just had no idea how to do pig tails, or even the lone pony tail or the palm tree as my mother in law calls it. Thank you for helping me finally find this information that I have been searching for for some time now.

You forgot the mohawk for the boys (or even tiny baby girls). I've seen a lot of babies rocking the 'hawk lately, and it's adorable!

when do you cut a girls hair for the first time?

The great thing about girls hair, or any child for that matter is that it grows back! In most cases, I suggest cutting it when it begins to look awkward. With my own daughter, her hair wasn't growing as fast as other girls. Then someone suggested I get it cut. I thought you must be crazy she has such little hair. It worked. Getting it cut got the baby hair off and the new hair grew extremely fast. If your girl already has long hair, it never hurts to get the trim to keep it healthy and all even since some hairs seems to grow faster than others. :) I hope this answered your question. If not, please leave another comment. Thanks so much for commenting!

Good article. I saw a cool boy's cut today at the park. It was kind of a mowhawk/mullet look that was basically a mohawk with bangs. Sounds weird, I'm sure, but it was very hip looking.

I like baby Suri's cut...

I do really feel like most of these baby hairdressers don't know how to do anything special. Like, why would they be baby hairdressers if they were any good?

I'm curious if there is anything that can be done when the baby is younger and the hair is still very short. My little girl is only 4 1/2 months, but she still has most of the hair she came out with, except for the bald spot from sleeping.

She has some hairs longer than others and the bottom hair at her neck is doing the duck tail thing and she has about two inches on top. I'm nervous to cut it though in case I make things worse. Her hair is very fine and wispy, so there's no point of putting clips, they just fall out!

Any suggestions at all would be great! Thanks!

Shannon-this is typical of baby hair. If you take her to a professional, they most likely will trim the ducktail for you and just make it even for under $7 usually. However, I would advise just waiting it through. Baby hair grows fast. There are some very tiny little clips available that just open, do not snap that may work. My best advice though, although it probably isn't what you want to hear, is just wait another month and see what the hair does. Also, keep her turned to try to lesson the bald spot. A haircut can spur the growth. It just depends how long you had envisioned it before the first haircut. You don't want to take away that memory. Anyhow, I hope I was some help! I am sure your baby is gorgeous either way!!!

Try the hair clips called "no slippy hair clippy". They are very well made, and they work with just the tiniest amount of hair you can imagine. They look so cute!!

Use baby lotion to style it and hold it in place. Conditioner also works well for this. There are velcro barretts that you can get for little babies. If the ends are a bit curly/wavy, you can scrunch them up using the lotion or conditioner and it'll make it look cute.

My daughter had the same problem at just over a year old. Her hair is very fine and curly and the tiny clips would just slide out not to mention that she took them out and chewed on them.

I started using those tiny plastic bands (not rubber) to get her hair into any kind of pony tail possible. At first it was one on top and in the back to encourage growth. Then I was able to do two on top and the one in back. Now about 8 months later and two very minimal haircuts she has enough for full blown pigtails.

If you cut the hair about 1/8 of an inch it will encourage growth and "clean up" the look. I trim her hair every six weeks when I do mine just to keep it healthy and encourage growth. It really does help.

Condition your babies hair with what works for your hair! Those baby condiitoners are way to mild for a baby that has untamed hair. My daughters hair looks so much nicer when I use my conditioners on her. But my daughter has to do everything mommy does.

I hope that tip can help another mommy

Jonina-My daughter used to always take hers out as well. My suggestion is just to try those ouchless pony tail holders with a bow on top that clasps. It might be harder for her to get off. Besides that just keep putting it up as often as you can. Eventually, she will give in and get use to the foreign object. My finally did!

I agree with Laura,
My daughter is finally getting used to t after about 6 months. Play around with where you tie the pny tails cause some spots might be pulling thos little hairs. Like when just one or two hairs is pulled and it hurts so bad its the same for babies.

hey laura im a dad to a 14month old little princess. i never thought i would be doing hair because i have a 3 yr old son but i am. i found giving my daughter her clips to play with while i do her hair seems to help but she loves it when daddy does her hair. i love pig tails but i also fold the pig tails in half it gives her a even cuter look just to change it up a little. mommy and other moms are commenting on how cute it is that dad does her hair so i do eat it up.i could use more ideas though i have to keep going on the styles to show moms that dads can do our daughters hair and we can make it cute. mom does good to thank you so much have a great day

I am very impressed! I think dad do a better job because often times they are more patient and feel less pressure! Thanks for being a great dad! I am sure your daughter cherishes the time and will continue to do so as she grows. I like the idea of splitting it in half! thanks for sharing! Another cute idea is to take the bangs and pull back into little sections. Put pony tail holders in. Then take the little pony tail and pull over and through the hair that is pulled back. It hides the holder and makes a cute style. I usually do five or six sections with the front hair. Hope that helps. Braids are great as well! Thanks so much for taking the time to read and comment!  Have a great day!

Thats too cool. I'm going to try that style on my daughter. My dad is the one who raised me so when I was little I taught him how to do ponytails and braid hair on my barbie dolls so he could do my hair. Dads can totally do hair!  I even got my dad to do my hair in fish tails (I'm an 80's child).

Try working with ribbons. They make great accessories to the cute hairdoos. My daughter will keep a ribbon around her head but not a headband...lol

I've been tying charms and beads on the ends of my ribbons for my daughters pig tails and it looks so pretty. Thats something you just can't do to the little boys!

I have to recommend the ouchless ponytail holders, I bought a pack of approx. 400 for less than $2 at Walmart. They stay in VERY well and VERY little hair is needed. Just a few suggestions though...DO NOT spray sunscreen on them they become brittle and fall right out, instead spray in your hands then apply (same goes for bug spray). Also to remove them painlessly stick your finger in the middle of the pigtail under the band and separate the hair the band will come out as you pull the hair through. I just toss them after each use, as they lose their elasticity but they are extremely cheap anyways! Hope this helps!!

During the winter is a great time to put girly beanies on. Get her pretty sun hat for the summer. Be persistent with the headbands and maybe one day you'll find she'll keep it on! If not at least you've tried..lol

I have a 5 1/2 month old baby girl and we usually pull her hair into a ponytail up top, but am looking for a few more styles. most of her hair is 4 inches longexcept the bottom around the ears and along the back it's not quite 1/2 inch. Just trying to find a few "new " styles. I liked the dads idea of folding the ponytails too...

I know it's meant with good intentions, but I found it to be silly overall and yes, sexist. Babies are great the way they are, why start worrying about how they "style" their hair? And cutting off a boy's curls? How awful! Way to teach your kids rigid gender roles and preoccupation with physical appearance.

My 22 month old has wild blond curls and I am thinking a trim to cut away the baby hair will tame some of it, but I am afraid it might just give her more spring to the curls making her have an afro. I long for long spirals. I am tempted to use a dab of gel, but am having trouble finding no tears styling products... any tips? Also, any tips on getting toddlers to keep their hands off the clips or elastics in their hair (I think that's probably a lost cause!)?
