Dark circles under eyes are a common beauty problem. These under eye dark circles give us an appearance of tiredness or illness. They make us to feel worse and are rather detrimental to our self esteem.

What are dark circles under eyes?

The skin below our eyes is very thin and is sparsely dotted with oil glands unlike the skin on rest of the body. Due to various reasons the skin under the eyes becomes thin and dry. Veins below eyes appear prominently when the under eye skin becomes dry and thin. This lends the area a dark appearance.

What causes dark circles under eyes?

There are various reasons which cause dark circles. Few of them have been listed below.

Heredity:

If others in your family have dark circles then there are fair chances of you getting dark circles under eyes. The thinness of under eye skin is a hereditary character. The thin under eye skin reveals dark veins underneath and appears

If you are more prone to allergies like itching of skin which is inherited then dark circles under eyes may be caused due to rubbing and inflammation of under eye skin.

Lack of Sleep and Fatigue:

Partying all night, lack of sleep, fatigue, sinus infections, pregnancy all these may cause paleness of skin. Pale skin makes blood vessels to appear prominently and give an appearance of dark circles.

Structure of Bone

Eyes set deep in skull bones may develop ark shadow under them.

Exposure to Sunlight

Exposure to sun light increases the level of pigmentation and cause tanning. Same thing applies well for the skin under eyes. When skin under eyes gets exposed to sun it tans and appears dark.

Medications:

Medications which cause dilation of blood vessels cause dark circles under eyes. Dilated blood vessels allow more blood to flow through them and these blood vessels look prominent through under eye skin which is very thin.

Nutrition

Poor nutrition leads to paleness of skin under eyes. Lack of essential nutrients in diet or poor diet causes discoloration of under eye skin.

Hormonal Imbalance

Hormonal Imbalance during pregnancy, menstruation, menopause etc cause paleness of skin and this leads to appearance of dark circles under eyes.

Age:

As we grow old the skin under eyes become more dry and wrinkled. The wrinkled skin below eyes appears as dark circles around eyes.

Tell me about it! I'm 14 and I have dark circles...I think It may be hereditary. I don't like using makeup, but that's what I may have to do. If I were you I would just focus on controlling the things about your appearance that you can control, and people will notice your dark circles less. =)

I am not sure if these remedies are helpful..
I have a couple of suggestions that am trying...1)Drinking plenty of water...i mean i drink like 4-5 litres daily,2)use under eye balms or creams of good brands or use any body butter,I use Freeman's which is really helping me reduce the dark circles sounds weird since itz suppose to be a B-O-D-Y Butter but itz working!  3) After every 30 mins or an hour use cold water(refrigerated) to wash eyes.

I hope these help you....Please keep praying for me...

I have the same problem! Try using the "wave" a cleanser, or any other cleanser, and then use a face lotion, like the energizer mariah faith was talking about below. It's from Merle Norman... oh! and concealer and foundation. it does work, well for me Hope it works for you!!

HI IM 31 AND HAVE GREAT EYES, NO DARK CIRCLES. HERES THE SECRETS THAT WORK. WASH YOUR UNDER EYE AREA WITH MILK, COLD MILKS BETTER. REALLY MAKES YOU LOOK FRESHER. ALSO AS YOU GET OLDER YOU CAN USE BOTOX OR INJECT A FILLER UNDER THE EYES. ASK A SURGEON, IT MAKES YOU LOOK AND FEEL GREAT! IF YOU WANT TO USE MAKEUP, HERES A GREAT STYLISTS TIP- USE FOUNDATION ON THE DARK CIRCLES AND THEN A CONCEALER- REALLY WORKS! ALSO I HAVE BEEN USING EYE CREAMS SINCE I WAS 16 AND HAVE ALWAYS PUT A LOT ON AND LEAVE IT ON OVERNIGHT. YOU GOT TO LOOK AFTER YOUR SKIN, CLEANSE, TONE AND MOISTURISE, ALWAYS GET GOOD SLEEP AND U GOT TO DRINK LOTS OF WATER LIKE 10 GLASSES- HARD TO DO BUT WORTH IT! ADD A LITTLE ORANGE DRINK TO DILUTE TO MAKE IT EASIER TO DRINK. IM 31 WITH 1 CHILD AND DONE ALL THESE METHODS AND EVERYONE THINKS IM LIKE 22 AND MY KID IS MY BROTHER, SO IT DOES WORK. DONT WORRY GUYS, THERES ALWAYS HOPE! GOODLUCK X

Try Retinol capules, apply to the undereyes. I heard using preperation H for emergencies but never tried it myself. When I was heavier I had bags pretty bad, now that I"m a smaller normal weight I don't really have them. Although I think people should realize that having "fatty", "slightly puffy" undereyes can be heriditary ethnically. If you are trying to do it before prom try retinol, & a LIGHTWEIGHT photo corrective concealer so you have great prom photos (try makeup before hand though).

I'm 13 and I have the dark circles underneath my eyes. Does the Milk thing really work? I might try that. if you wash your face with your cleanser then you need to use the lotion right afterwards. I use an energizer. It's in a tiny tube from Merle Norman. DON'T STOP USING IT! I noticed it helped the dark circles, and after I stopped using it they came back so that's a good tip, also you could use the wal-mart brand beauty lotion for face, but I prefer the energizer! hope this is helpful... I just need to start using the energizer again I guess. and I do use Concealer and foundation, but make sure you match your skin tone, like don't go to light! been there done that  :p
