Yahoo! Small Business offers Yahoo! Domains for $9.95 per year. Not a bad price but not nearly the best around. Here's a brief overview of what some people think of Yahoo! Domains and Yahoo Web Hosting .
On one side of the debate you have a few who claim Yahoo offers an extremely reliable service -- but you pay a slight premium compared to GoDaddy and other registrars. Still, Yahoo Domain registration comes in lower than the overpriced Network Solutions and even Dotster who've been overcharging for domain registration for years.
Although some call Yahoo's price unprecedented and unbeatable, we've found numerous, less expensive alternatives. It's actually quite surprising that the overall view of Yahoo Domain Registrations is really quite bad.
The domain management panel is slow and poorly designed. Don't plan on getting much accomplished in anything less than four clicks per domain. They don't offer multiple domain updates. The panel is occasionally down completely with no explanation or apology offered. Service by email is even worse according to some who have experienced it firsthand.
Service by phone is a little better, but put aside 45 minutes to navigate the labyrinthine touch menus while listening to elevator music. Transferring a domain out of Yahoo is absolute hell and you can plan on about two weeks and ten emails or phone calls.
One customer related this experience with Yahoo trying to move a domain and creating a new domain. The domain he had at Network Solutions was never transferred over to Yahoo (even though he paid for 3 years). Come to find out that Yahoo DOES NOT DO domain transfers (only new domain registrations). When he asked them to cancel the service on one domain, they cancelled the service on ALL his domains with NO refund. He is now on his way BACK to Network Solutions (GoDaddy.com might be a better choice, at least price-wise). In fact he says he thinks he will be cancelling ALL of his Yahoo subscriptions at this point and looking for a replacement. Not very impressed with Yahoo's level of service at all.
Another customer relates: "Terrible service. I registered a domain name for five years for the promotional price of $4.99, but Yahoo! charged the full price (double the promotional price) and denied me a credit, citing its no-refund policy. At the same time, I registered another domain name at the full price, but Yahoo had no legal right to register it! Register.com owned the name!" Not a happy camper at all.
On a strictly business note, this from another very disgruntled customer. "On a Friday morning, Yahoo randomly closed our business web site and the associated dozen e-mail accounts. It took me many hours (and over an hour of holding) to find out (1) they couldn't explain it and (2) they wouldn't even assure me the files on the web site could be recovered. We were paid up. So how can this be a business service if you can lose your whole site & e-mails? In addition to the above nightmare, billing is completely uncooperative. I cancelled a personal address -- according to Yahoo's own policy I should get a pro-rated refund for the $10 amount not used for domain registration. It's been more than six e-mails back and forth and they still haven't given me a pro-rated refund. Most of the responses simply ignore or never read the message I sent. Bottom line: Unreliable, poor billing, bad customer service.
I could go on and on. Why do you think a company with the reputation of Yahoo would allow for this type of terrible service under their company logo? Maybe they have tried to expand beyond their capability to manage. Whatever the cause, service problems of this kind will only hurt Yahoo's reputation and with Google already beyond their reach, they'd better watch over their shoulder for Bill Gates and company. They're breathing down their necks.
