Frankie Negron continues to show he's not just a one-hit wonder with the release of the 2003 album Inesperado.
Blessed with a deep, booming and smooth voice (and boyish good looks),
Negron is able to convey a lot of passion in his songs. Mostly a
salsa album, the songs are very rich with the typical instruments of
piano, Spanish guitar, keyboards, bass, horns, conga drums, etc. and
some of the songs (i.e. Por Descuido, De que me sirve) even have a
little violin. I am also impressed with Negron’s versatility by
branching into different types of music besides salsa including a
couple of ballads, and a cha-cha.
Some of the more notable songs include:
Mi Mulata
Catchy dance tune, lots of horns, this song has had the most radio play - salsa
Por Descuido
Starts with a violin, turns into a slower salsa. There’s also a slower ballad version on this CD.
De Que Me Sirve
This song is a ballad - very passionate song about heartbreak and lost
love. This one is probably my favorite song on the CD.
Hasta que te enamores
A song about a relentless man doing whatever it takes to win the love
of a woman - this song also had a lot of radio play - salsa
Sombras nada mas
Starts with an acapella, which clearly displays his powerful voice - turns into a slower cha-cha.
Tu perdon
A song about a man asking for forgiveness (we all can relate to this one) - salsa
Bottom line: An excellent album and a good one to get familiar with this underrated superstar. Highly recommended.
