About Clay flowers

An artist can transform all kinds of materials into an art work. Modern technology has invented so many man-made materials. These new improvements have advanced some traditional crafts into the artistic field.

In history, clay flowers are nothing new in China, Mexico and Latin American countries. However, the traditional folk crafts have rarely been treated as an art for lack of right clays and sophisticated expression. Only very recently, they have been recognized as a new professional sphere, in terms of art standards, and have gained their popularity rapidly.

To make a clay flower with artistic value, we have to use a clay dough or paste specially designed and formulated by modern technology. The newly-invented clay materials are still mainly made of corn-flour or flour. They seem as same as their traditional counterparts in name but they are totally different in essence.

For modern clays to be used to create an art, they have to overcome the traditional shortcomings and at least have the following 3 characteristics:

1) When they are dried, clay flowers are as hard as porcelain. They shall have a sense of mass and volume. Most importantly they shall own the super durability and has to last as long as those master collections created by the past greatest artists.

2) During the creating processing, the clays have the compatibility to most colored method, including oil paints, to ensure rich, brilliant or special color effects that will neither fade nor change easily. Besides, oil paints or colors have to comprise to not become so thick or overpowering that they destroy the characteristic beauty of the clays.

3) The substance of the clay materials has to provide a smooth and close grain of the surface to produce the subtly detailed form of an art work. While they are being used for mass commercial production and in broad application, it is a must for them to give an artist the possibility to show his or her nature spirit, talent, and creativity. In other words, they shall have the uniqueness to create something un-identical to express an artist's personal touch.

Besides the most popular polymer clays that need to be baked, there are some clay materials newly invented to meet the requirements. It is my pleasure to make clay flowers and to introduce them to you.
