In order to burn calories and lose weight by walking on a treadmill, a treadmill interval workout is the best one to use. In addition, incline treadmill walking helps you to reach your target heart rate and burn off the fat in your muscles. Running on an incline is better for you than a walk on a flat surface, but you do need to balance the two workouts by doing each one at certain intervals.

Experts recommend that when working out on a treadmill, you should vary the intensity. This means you should run or walk with intervals during which you warm up by walking slowly and then gradually increase the speed and the incline. Then by changing back and forth with intervals of high and low speed you help to train your muscles and also give them a period of rest when you are not exerting a lot of effort in your workout.

You can vary the incline level on a treadmill and by using different speed settings you can really give your body a good cardio workout. Running at your target heart rate helps you to burn calories faster and if you choose various intervals of low, medium and high for several minutes each, you will be getting the best benefit from exercising during your treadmill walking. Most of the treadmills have interval programs already programmed in, so you can choose the one you like best.

The total treadmill workout time should be about 30 minutes a day. If you wish you can also use alternate your routine between walking and running. This is best when you are really used to working out and is not recommended for beginners. Another type of interval training you can use is to alternate your days of treadmill exercise with walking outdoors. This way you really do get to walk an incline when you choose an area with low hills.
