I am often asked about the science behind amber teething necklaces. Parents also want to know if there are any side effects to wearing amber for long periods of time.

Unlike teething gels, powders or pain relief syrups, the traditional beaded amber necklaces imported from the Baltic region are a non-invasive and side-effect free remedy for the pain and complications of teething, such as lack of appetite, upset tummies, ear ache, fevers and colds.

A natural analgesic, amber will help calm a baby without resorting to drugs.

Amber is a resin, not a stone. It is therefore warm to the touch, as well as very comfortable and light to wear.

Scientific investigation into the therapeutic effects of amber is ongoing.

Currently, there are two different theories that attempt to explain how wearing amber on the skin can have a soothing and calming effect on teething babies and toddlers.

One theory suggests that when amber is worn on the skin, the skin's warmth releases miniscule amounts of healing oils from the amber which are then absorbed via the skin into the bloodstream.

Amber's anti-inflammatory and therapeutic properties are also recognized by allopathic medicine. In Austria, Switzerland and Germany, you will find amber teething necklaces sold in local pharmacies. Pharmacists and doctors have long known about the healing properties of amber which include calmative, analgesic, antispasmodic, expectorant, and febrifuge (anti-fever) functions.

A second theory is based on scientific findings which have shown that amber is electromagnetically alive and therefore charged with a significant amount of organic energy. Its special attribute is the fact that it is electronegative. Wearing amber produces negative ionisation on the skin's surface. This, in turn, has a positive influence on the human body. The negative ions assist in the in the prevention of illness. These health-promoting effects apply to babies, children and adults alike.

It is possible that the soothing and calming effect of amber teething necklaces, which has been empirically observed, is based on a combination of the factors listed above.

These things(Amber "TEETHING" necklace) MUST be a scam!! I dropped 40 big ones from, of all places, a GNC (health)store! My poor suffering grandson has been wearing it a week and if I didn't know any better I'd say he is worse. He was hurting so bad that like a foolish, doting Nana, I would probably have paid $400 to get relief for him. And of all things I tried to bring it back and he, the OWNER of this store, fed me a line just like he did when I bought it. He went on and on and on how good they worked  and how his kids never drooled, no pain, etc.etc.etc.When I told him that it wasn't working and would like a refund or something to compensate for the $40 I felt was wasted. He went on and on and on again why he couldn't take it back or even give me a store credit. He told me to give it 2 weeks and if he(grandson) wasn't showing marked improvement we'd work something out. And then he moved it to 2-3 weeks and before I could get off the dang phone listening to him go on and on and on somemore he had it pushed back to 4 weeks!! Yep if I don't see a BIG improvement in 4 weeks he will either eat the necklace (just an expression for the $40) or give me a store credit. Yeah I just bet he will!! Heck by then we SHOULD see a marked improvement!! By then he should have a whole set in!! Just kidding of course but the last of the first 4 should be in so sure he will be better! I believe those first 4, two on top and two on bottom, are the worst. He thinks I was born yesterday I spose. Well I ain't no college grad but I know BAD BUSINESS when I see it and he has lost mine. I HATE that this amber necklace wasn't the miracle cure that he made it out to be. At least it pretty. Anyone out there want to buy a teething necklace? It works GREAT!! NOT!!!

As with a lot of natural remedies, what works for one does not always solve the problems of the other. Amber necklaces are not a scam, they have provided immense relief to many children I know, as well as my own daughter - its unfortunate that for some children they don't seem to offer any relief and one day the reason for this will become clear. I would like to suggest that you try the amber necklance on your grandson BEFORE the next tooth starts trying to come through so the oils are already being released to him before he experiences pain...and persevere with it instead of giving up so soon... the eye teeth and molars are pretty major players and yet to come through... you already have the necklace, so its worth trying again right =) ~nadiya.

I agree with Nadiya. They don't work for every baby. I own a store and we sell amber necklaces. I was very skeptical of them at first although I had a number of friends who swore they worked. I tried it on my daughter and we saw amazing results. The VAST majority of parents who buy them say they noticed astonishing results. There are a few who say they couldn't be sure whether there was a change. I'm sorry you received such poor customer service, if I were the store owner I would have accepted your return. -Lindsay

They are wonderful! I am convinced they make a huge difference. DD still is fussy when teething, but if she's not wearing her necklace she is 10 times worse! I wear one myself and I think it helps with my neck pain.
