Most doctors don’t ask you about your regularity. They may think it is not important to have a bowel movement every day. In fact, some doctors think its ok when you have 2-3 bowel movements a week.

If you have one, two or more bowel movements a day, you may still be constipated. If you are leaving fecal matter along your colon walls because you don’t eat enough fiber this is considered constipation. Remember constipation is really the elimination of all fecal matter that passes through your colon from the food that you ate in the previous meals.

If you sit on the toilet and have to stay there over 5-10 minutes pushing, straining, or paining to have a bowel movement, then you are constipated. Straining to have a bowel movement, overtime, leads to hemorrhoids, varicose veins, or fissures.

If you eat three meals a day, then you should have three bowel movements each day. The first bowel movement should take place in the morning when you wake up or soon after you have had breakfast. Typical you should experience the urge for a bowel movement 20-30 minutes after you eat. The other bowel movements should be during the day and just before bedtime.

In her book, Healthy Digestion the Natural way, 2000, D. Lindsey Berkson defines constipation as,

“A healthy person should have at least one bowel movement a day. Medical textbooks state that individual variation goes from several times a day to several times a week. However, having worked with people for many years on improving their health, I would define constipation as not having one to several daily bowel movements, or having too long an intestinal-transit time."

If you eat three meals a day and only have one or two bowel movements, then the second and third meal are backing up in your colon and staying there too long.

When your fecal matter stays too long in your colon, water and toxins are pulled out of the fecal matter and absorbed through your colon wall. This makes the fecal matter stiff and hard. Your colon will now have a hard time moving this hard fecal matter through its sections and out the rectum. The result is puffing and straining in the bathroom.

its not just about fiber. DRINK WATER. Just about every person i talk to who has constipation problems only drinks two or three glasses of water per day. That is not enough. Don't believe me? Drink two glasses per hour for a couple of days and see what happens. Don't just depend on peristalsis to empty your bowels. Your colon is six feet long, and if your constipated, it may mean that your colon is completely full of fecal waste from one end to the other. If you don't defecate, the toxins in your waste get reabsorbed into your bloodstream through the colon. Drink more, its as simple as that.

I wanted to share some insight into the world of being regular. I have ulcerative colitis, my mother has crohns, to say we have bowel issues is an understatement. We have always struggled with maintaining any type of routine until recently. In the morning we have been drinking a couple of glasses of water first thing... before and food, coffee, tea, etc. and every morning we GO. How great is that? For anyone that needs some consistency in their lives try this out and hopefully it will work for you too.

Thank you Jeff for your great comment,

Drinking something first thing in the morning is a great way to active your system into the action necessary to eliminate the accumulated waste it has been collecting during the night.  Just make sure you don't drink juices with sugar. I alway recommend fresh squeezed lemon juice, no sugar in a glass of distilled water.  Then wait about 30 minutes or so before you eat something heavy.  Best of all don't eat something heavy, but some fruits, more juices, just water.

I have a few tips that might help a few people. I had irregularity for a month or so, and I read milk/ dairy products were hard to digest; so I avoided them. I am usually sensitive to them, but once I began to eat milk and such, I saw a little difference. So if someone of you are Lactose-sensitive but not allergic, maybe you should try.

I also tried Activia. Of course it didn’t work right away, but I think it really helped a lot. And there is a drink called PruneSmart that looks like it might be for the elderly, but it works really well for me. I also eat cereal called FiberOne that does wonder as well. I’m not a professional and these are only suggestions that helped me, but I thought I might share what did help me when I went through irregularity.

Rudy, Thanks for your insights on healthy metabolism. Im a 25 year old male and typically get worried a lot of times when I have 3-4 bowel movements at times in a day. Typically I have about three and I also have a feeling that my bowel movements aggravate when I'm tensed. Also I do feel that I have IBS which leads to untimely bowel movements at times in a day. Sometimes I notice that some of the food that I eat does not get absorbed well and passes out as it is. Do you think this is abnormal and it should always be absorbed well? I did get my stool tests done more than a couple of times only to find the reports normal. Due to think there can be any long term consequences of IBS or more bowel movements per day?. Please provide me some insight.

Thanks,

SK

Sk, you may be right regarding tension and bowel movements.  Tension can cause constipation and it can also cause loose bowel movements.  I would think 3 bowel movement per day are normal, if you have 3 solid meals per day.

If you have more bowel movements than you should, then you could be playing out the psychological condition in your body of, "I can't hold on to things in my life."  Second, to fast a transient time for your food through your gastrointestinal system can cause incomplete digestion and cause malnutrition in the long run.

Since you have IBS, this tells me you have some psychological problems that you need to work on.  If you worry, have anxiety or depression, or lack confidence in yourself, this can affect the function of your whole body, putting you out of hormonal balance.  This will upset your bowel movement regularity and cause colon inflammation.  Where the inflammation occurs in your colon will depending on the type of anxiety and thoughts that you have.

Hi.  My son suffers from constipation regularly and I think it is associated to tension etc..  He had tried everything and, bless him, he feels awkward enough discussing it with his mum but (having read up on this) I suggested he try prune juice.  He bought some the other day and had a small glass...it worked amazingly well.  He had no pain or cramp that he has had with laxatives, and he did have some stomach gurgles within about half hour, but he went and has had a small glass each evening now for 5 days.  He feels so much better and I now have a bottle of prune juice in my fridge on his request.  I have not read about anyone having any adverse effects from daily consumption.  I hope this helps you...

Anonymous,

It difficult to say what you should do because I don't know your eating habits - what you eat, when you eat it, and how you eat.  In addition, I don't know what your thoughts are and your personality.  What you eat and when you eat  and your various feelings determine how your body works.  Try this.  Don't eat heavy food in the morning.  Up until noon eat and drink fruits of various kinds.  Then with each meal - lunch and dinner - always have raw salads.  Do this for a couple weeks and see if things change for you. Don't much water or liquid with you meals.  For snacks always eat fruits.  Drink a minimum of two glasses of water everyday.

My question pertains to diet. Right now I drink about 10 - 12 glasses of water a day (at least 3 on waking up). My diet consists of fresh fruits and enriched oatmeal in the morning, raw veggies and fresh tuna at lunch, snacking on fruits and trail mix in between. And salmon or chicken with more veggies for dinner. I also drink pure green tea twice a day. I only drink soy milk. The only thing I flavour my food with is olive oil, lemon juice and ground black pepper. I bake all my meat. I exercise everyday for about 45 minutes. I am also taking a complete 2- week body cleanse. These are non-stimulant herbal supplements and fiber in tablet form. It's supposed to cleanse my colon, liver and digestive system. It's been about 4 days now and still, I only go once a day. (yesterday I didn't go at all). My stool is also not solid. I am concerned. I thought that the cleanse would really get out everything that might have been backed up. My question is, if your diet consists of mostly fresh food with lots of nutrients that are absorbed by the body, no fat or grease or any waste, should you still have one or more bowel movements a day? And what should your stool look like? Could it be that if you only eat good food, there is less stuff for your body to try to get rid of?

Leslie, if you are drinking 12 glasses of water per day, 2 glasses of tea, and eating fruits and vegetable, you may be getting 16 or more glasses of water a day.  This is a tremendous amount of water.

I would recommend backing off on the water and experiment with 4, 5, 6, glasses of water per day.  Cut it from from 10 or 12 per day to 4 and 5 a day and see how you feel and if you stools change.

I am 17, I eat somewhat healthy ususally wheetabix or oatmeal for breakfast, 3/4 glasses of water a day, a granola snack, a sandwich on wheat bread for lunch, and usually whatever my mom kaes for dinner which is usually vegetables and salmon/chicken or a wheat pasta. I haven't had a movement for 2 days and before that I only did because I used an herbal laxative. What specific changes should I make in my diet?

Q: I am concerned at my constant bowel movement, mainly on the weekend at the end of a working week. I feel it maybe stress or anxiety related because it is generally ok during the week. It may be tension from homelife but I stool up to 6-8 times on Saturday and Sunday, generally always healthy firm stool but it becomes uncomfortable phsyically not to mention the inconvenience. I genrally eat well, plenty of water, fruit and vegetables and exercise regularly.

Can any one offer me some advice?

BH,

Stress is the number one creator of all diseases, yet few people and doctors do not discuss this or feel that it is.  Stress creates an imbalance in your hormones in your body and the hormones regulate all body functions.

It's good that you noticed a change in your bowel frequency simply when your environment changes.  The best way to deal with stress is to face those situations that are stressful, so that you can let go of them.

If you have issues with your children or spouse, then sit down with them and come from a place of kindness and helpfulness.  For example, if you are not getting along with your spouse, then sit down with her and apologize for your behavior and ask what changes you can make so that you get along better.  Don't always blame the other person for the problems you are having, first look at what part you played in creating the situation, take responsibility for changing so you can improve your relationship.  If the other person doesn't take responsibility for their part, when you sit down and talk with them, then no progress can be made in the relationship.

Excess constipation can be saying that you are trying to get rid of the things you don't like in your life, and you are not taking care of the problems, but instead you are internalizing what you need to do outside your body.  So why not sit down with those people and come from kindness and ask how you can change so that you can be a better person and create a loving environment for all involved.

Rudy, some of your advice is very helpful, but this last post was CRAP. Yes, stress can be a trigger but it is usually not an underlying cause for constipation, diet is. Try learning more about gluten allergy and celiac disease. People see "high fiber" and immediately go to get bread, cereal or pasta, but that is exactly was is causing the digestive problems in the first place. And if ignored can result in anxiety, depression, fatique and not being able to adequately deal with stress. Again GLUTEN ALLERGY - remove wheat from your diet - replace with rice and legumes, fresh veggies, live food with enzymes and you will see a difference. Look it up!

Most illnesses that you have in your body originate in your mind.  It is impossible to have an illness with out you creating it by your mental imbalance cause by your upbringing.  The exception to this is organic imperfections caused by birth or genetics.  Your attitude is typical of many people in denying that the body is one unit and not split into two separate parts.  Your mental imbalance causes you to eat the wrong diet.

The cause of disease is partially due to stress and partially due to diet. It is not solely based on stress or a "mental imbalance". I have celiac disease that I do believe was initially triggered by stress but, by changing my diet I have seen a drastic change in my health. Are you familiar with Gerson therapy?

Sorry to see that you are in denial of the true facts.  Stress will cause you to eat in a certain way.  If you did not have stress your diet would be different.  If you have mental imbalances you eat food to keep the imbalance in check.  If you don't have any mental illness or neurosis, then you will eat a health diet that does not create disease.

I have 4-6 bowel movement daily, which causes my anal area very irritating and burning. Is there any way to reduce my bowel movement? Hence the burning sensation could go away. Also I can not complete my bowel movement at one time.

If you are having that many bowel movement, i hope you have seen a doctor to check your colon.  That many bowel movement is not normal.  Should be having 1-2 per day and they should be continuous and not in sections.  When you have bowel movements in sections and they are hard you are not drinking enough water and you are not eating enough fiber.

Fiber helps to keep stools softer and continuous so that you dont have incomplete bowel movement.  If you stay on the toilet longer and move side to side until more stools come out then maybe you can have less bowel movements.  Moving side to side helps to move out stools without straining.

Mike,

First of all eating in restaurants they tend to over cook vegetables and use a lot of oil and salt.
First thing you need to do is get in a good raw green salad every day and in between meals eat raw fruits.  Its also sounds like you are eating too much fried foods so you need to back off on fast foods.

This is a start and do this for a month and see what the difference is.
