Most doctors don’t ask you about your regularity. They may think it is not important to have a bowel movement every day. In fact, some doctors think its ok when you have 2-3 bowel movements a week.

If you have one, two or more bowel movements a day, you may still be constipated. If you are leaving fecal matter along your colon walls because you don’t eat enough fiber this is considered constipation. Remember constipation is really the elimination of all fecal matter that passes through your colon from the food that you ate in the previous meals.

If you sit on the toilet and have to stay there over 5-10 minutes pushing, straining, or paining to have a bowel movement, then you are constipated. Straining to have a bowel movement, overtime, leads to hemorrhoids, varicose veins, or fissures.

If you eat three meals a day, then you should have three bowel movements each day. The first bowel movement should take place in the morning when you wake up or soon after you have had breakfast. Typical you should experience the urge for a bowel movement 20-30 minutes after you eat. The other bowel movements should be during the day and just before bedtime.

In her book, Healthy Digestion the Natural way, 2000, D. Lindsey Berkson defines constipation as,

“A healthy person should have at least one bowel movement a day. Medical textbooks state that individual variation goes from several times a day to several times a week. However, having worked with people for many years on improving their health, I would define constipation as not having one to several daily bowel movements, or having too long an intestinal-transit time."

If you eat three meals a day and only have one or two bowel movements, then the second and third meal are backing up in your colon and staying there too long.

When your fecal matter stays too long in your colon, water and toxins are pulled out of the fecal matter and absorbed through your colon wall. This makes the fecal matter stiff and hard. Your colon will now have a hard time moving this hard fecal matter through its sections and out the rectum. The result is puffing and straining in the bathroom.

I have a bowel movement after each meal . Is this too much?

Respond to this comment

» left by Anonymous (328 days 5 hours ago.)
Having a bowel movement after each meal is the ideal, natural way your colon should work. Not many people are that fortunate to have a bowel movement after every meal. So you are eating right or its in your genetic make up that makes you a strong and healthy person.

I think the writer would be well served to find out that 3 BM's a day is Far More often than not -
an indication of obsessive eating - Not good health !
Respond to this comment
» left by Anonymous (147 days 7 hours ago.)
Obsessive eating can not be judged merely by the amount of times a person has a bowel movement. Obsessive eating is subjective; a person can eat 4 thousand calories a day and still be healthy (body builders) or eating 2500 and have an eating disorder (eating just to "feel good" or satiate other emotional needs via food). You CAN NOT simply tell just by the count. Just thought I would let you know; your response is based on biased ignorance and misinformation. Based on my own experience (usually right after every meal); I am healthy, and haven't had any health problems. I eat around 2-3700 calories a day and weigh around a hundred pounds. (And, NO, no eating disorders!) I eat when I'm hungry and go #2 when I have to. It's done me well so far.

as you can see there are some people that are misinformed about bowel movements. If they have recommendations then they should not be anonymous but sign their posts. Most studies done about how many bowel movements a person should have are usually done with people who are not normal, but in fact do not eat a natural diet.

How beneficial would a 'greens' type of drink be in helping with irregular bowel movements?
JM

» left by Anonymous (249 days 21 hours ago.)
Green drinks are one of the best drinks you can have. And, its usefulness will depend on what greens are in the green drink. Greens provide the vitamins and minerals needed for a healthy colon. If they contain fiber, they will make your bowel movements more regular. Rudy Silva

So how do I become more regular? I usually only go once a day and that's during the morning, I'd really like to go sometime during the day so that I feel more healthier and lighter.

Between meals, eat fruits and drink fruit juices. These will help to activate peristaltic colon movement. Using MSM supplements will also help make you more regular. Rudys

If you eat a big meal of meat, potatoes, bread, or pasta, these are hard to digest and to move through the colon. If this is the case, eat less of these during the meal and add more fresh vegetables so they mix with the other food making them easier to go through the colon. And if you eat fruits and drink their juices. Rudys

I have a bowel movement about 3 times a week, if that somtimes...I eat healthy, tons of fiber! Tons of fruits, and i excersise regularly... still no change!? i dont understand what im doing wrong!? Plus, i wanted to ask you what kind of education you had to obtain in order to become a Nutritionist!? thank you...

To become a nutritionist it will depend on what state you are in and what kind of nutritionist you want to be. I went to a private school for 2 years to become a nutritional consultant using only natural remedies. You can go to a four year college to become a nutritionist but they do not teach you natural nutrition that is why i choose the private school. The school I went to in Berkeley, California is the Bauman College, which specializes in nutrition and the course cost is around $10,000 or more.

I am not sure why you have only three bowel movements per day. I would have to know more about your history. One big factor in constipation is your emotional or psychological make up. If you have a lot of stress, anxiety, or neurosis this will definitely prevent you from have normal bowel movements.

Hi Rudy! It is normal for me to have 3 bowel movements a day and usually within 10-15 minutes after eating. I suffer from chronic insomnia (13 years now) and notice that when I have not slept but an hour or no sleep at all, it causes me to have even more bowel movements? The other day and I kid you not, I think I set a record, 10 normal movements in one day. Needless to say...I was pooped out! I do eat healthy and good fiber but anymore I seem to be upping my movements between 3 to 5 per day. I don't suffer from any gas, pain, bloating and never constipation! Could my increased movements be the cause of something else? Hope to hear from you and thanks!

Lori
A.K.A. always pooped out!

It is typically normal to have a bowel movement 15 to 30 minutes after a meal. My 12 year old daughter just sees a meal and heads to the bathroom. Having more bowel movements than meals per day is not normal. If you eat a lot, then 4 may be normal, but more than that can be a sign of constipation, since you are not removing all the fecal matter during your normal bowel movements. Result is you have to have more bowel movements to complete the job.

If you do not get 6-8 hours solid sleep every day, your hormones and your body functions are out of sequence. This is reflected in your abnormal bowel movement frequency. Perhaps it woud be best to concentrate on your sleep issue. Look at an anxiety, sadness, personal problems, depression and start studying and reading how you can reduce them so you can get more sleep. Try using melatonin and see if it works for you. Getting regular sleep will improve your overall health.

If you aren't consuming fruits and vegetables like you should, I would suggest Fiber One. A bowl of their cereal or a bar of their snack food usually does the trick in moving things along quickly.

Respond to this comment

» left by Rudy Silva from Sunnyvale (161 days 6 hours ago.)
The idea for constipation is not just to provide artificial fiber to get things moving, but to provide natural fiber from fruits and vegetables that also provides the minerals in the proper ratio. Fiber in cereal and bars is not natural and to expect good health long term by using these products is a false security.

Raji, Its normal for someone to feel like having an bowel movement after eating. My daughter feels like that as soon as she sits down to eat so she goes to the bathroom instead of eating. After eating, many people have a bowel movement within 30 minutes. Rudy Silva

Haha, I'm please to know that my 9 year old son isn't the only one with the issue. As soon as he sits at the table for dinner, he immediatly gets up and needs to go to the washroom for a bowel movement, then he'll return for his meal.

Also I was curious about why as soon as I start moving in the morning, that I automatically need to go have a bowel movement. I was concerned and thought that maybe it was abnormal. but after reading these postings, I feel much better.
I go quite reguarly.. Even more so now that I've changed my diet ( well at least trying to, I would like to lose weight) by adding more fruits and vegatables to my diet. I go about 3 to 4 times daily.

Thanks ever so much for all your responses!!

Sincerely,
Dana

I have 1 - 2 bowl movements a day. usually after breakfast and late night, if not late night then definitely next day morning. i get most of my fiber from cereal (raisin bran and such) and bread (wheat bread/FiberOne bread). apple is pretty much the only fruit i consume, but not every day. i live on my own with this family, so i usually always get food/meal from the stores, i rarely eat a nice home cooked meal with fresh groceries. and i do like veg and some salad but im definitely a meat person. sometimes my feaces come out 2 colored, like dark light brown mixed together like peanut buter and jelly. like 2 color twisted together, not 50/50. how would you improve my eating habits and such? and is my bowl movement ok? color of my waste ok? and what type of fruit has the most fiber? and what ways can i increase my intake of vegetables?(good fresh healthy vegetables) i hate veg from corner stores cause i dont ever think they fresh.

Just recently I started to have a bowel movement after each meal. I had very green movements at first then tri-colored green and brown. I have alot of gas sometimes. Each time I go now it is a one time poop and my stomach sometimes feels like it is burning then goes away. What is your thought on this? Need to be concerned?

Denise, The color of you stool is very important. Stools should be a brownish color. If it green it can be because of the foods you eat, especially if you eat many greens or drink a green drink. If you have burning in your stomach, it could be heartburn or ulcers. You should check with your doctor to see what kind of stomach problems you might have.

i have decent to good fiber source each day, but i dont bowel much. sometimes once every 2 days. i dont eat much, could that be why? how much food consumption would cause a bowel movement? (like how many grams) i could go on a whole day by just eating snack size meals, like an apple for breakfast, a bowl of cereal for lunch (50 grams), a piece of chicken after that and maybe 2 slices of bread and half a papaya or a mango for dinner. could that be why i dont bowel much? is my eating habits bad? ive been like this since yearly teens. i usually be good with just 1 good meal a day. if not, if not.

Joseph, You way of eating to me seems ok. You don't have to stuff yourself three times a day to feel this is the right to eat. Snacking with the right kinds of foods maybe the ideal way to eat. Eating one thing at a time gives your stomach a chance to digest that food completely and properly. But the way you eat indicates you should have a least one bowel movement per day. So i would think you should eat some vegetables during the day and drink some juices that would add more water to your diet. Bread can be ok if it more whole type of floor. White bread is hard to digest because it lacks fiber. Just make a few changes in your diet to experiment a little and do the that by eating more different friuts and vegetables and drink more fruit juices.

I'm doing some research for my little brother. He's 9 and has to go DURING every meal. We sit down to eat, whether it's at home or out, and at some point he has to go. We've told him before that to go to the bathroom multiple times (once for urination and one for bowel movements at the least) is not appropriate and that he should wait. He insists that everytime he has to go #2 he "can't hold it." Does this sound normal to you? We can't seem to figure it out.

I believe it is normal to go to the bathroom around 30 minutes or so after each meal.  So if you have 3 meals a day, then it's normal to have 1 bowel movements after each meal.  When you eat a meal the body sends a signal to the colon that food will be coming into the bowel and it will be time soon to have a bowel movement.  My daughter is the same as your son and she is twelve.  She sits down to eat and with a few minutes she has to go to the bathroom.

With children their bowel movement are pretty normal as long as they eat a good diet with vegetables and fruits and fiber of some sort.  I would not worry about his behavior and dont try to force any other behavior because this will put him out of balance with what is going on with his body.

If you suspect some illness, then of course have him seen by a doctor.

Hi. I am a person that has always been regular. I normally go 2 times a day...for the past week and a half, its been messed up. For the first 2 days it was like diarreah, but after that its been cramping and I go and go, but hardly NOTHING comes out. I have not done anything in my life any different. For the past 2 days I have not went at all. What do you think could be causing this?

Respond to this comment
» left by Rudy Silva from Sunnyvale, Ca, USA (107 days 1 hour ago.)
Angela,
Its difficult to say what is going on with you, since I dont know all of your history.  But when you have diarreah, your body is trying to get rid of something in your stomach or intestinal tract - intestines or bowel.  If you eat something that is spoiled then you would expect to have diarrhea for a few days and then get back to normal.  You many have to eat more fiber vegetables and grains and fruits to get back to normal, unless you have some other type of infection or issue with your intestinal tract.

Hi Rudy. I went from having 3 bowel movements to 1 - thus also have gained some weight in the process. I am currently living in taiwan, but prior, I was in india for 6 months. (I did get some stomach bugs, but all was well & bowel movements returned to normal after some antibiotics.) Yes, I've had a hard time (psychologically) re-adjusting to life in Taiwan...but this reduced bowel movements & weight gain is frustrating me. No pains, bloating, etc. As you may know, taiwanese people love to eat noodles & bread (flour) - should that be cut out? And just wondering if my bowel movements will ever return to normal. Thanks!

Hi Jen,

One thing you need to do if you have not done so already.  You need to take some probiotics to replace the good bacteria that was destroyed by the antibiotics that you took.  Loss of good bacteria in the colon can upset your bowel movement regularity. Use it for month and take it between meal - not food in your stomach. If you eat noodles and bread its ok, but you need to add vegetables with these meals, since these products have no fiber and you will have a hard time moving them through your colon.  Stress is another factor that can hold up your bowel movements since it can tighten up the colon walls preventing peristaltic action

Hi 19 year old,

One thing that really affects bowel movements is your state of anxiety, stress, worry or whatever you want to call it.  But if you are not eating vegetables or fruits, this also will extend your bowel movement frequency.  I suggest you try is eating oats every morning, but don't use milk.  Use rice dream, or almond  or oat milk or a combination of these milks.  Don't use sugar, just add some raisins and banana slices.Try this for a couple of weeks, then came back here and let us know how you are doing. OK?  What I do is eat oat with apple juice.   Also don't buy the processed quick oats, but the natural oats that take about 5-10 to cook.

im a bus driver and its hard for me to eat things that make me have a good BM. I don't have one often. on my off days I take green tea and things to make me go to the restroom to so call clean me out from the week. is that good to do?

Respond to this comment

Hi Sheri from Los Angeles,

If you sit a lot and can't always go to the restroom when you need, then holding back can cause you to have constipation.  Holding a bowel movement back teaches your colon that it was not important for you to go, so it is not going to remind you that often.

Drinking green is good and will help with your overall health, except that it has caffeine.  If you don't drink that much then that would be ok, but caffeine does effect your adrenal gland over a good time period.

When driving a bus carry some fruits and juices to drink when you are stopped or during your breaks.  This is the secret for promoting bowel movements.  Eat plenty of fresh fruits and juices.  You many not get results immediately, but just keep eating them to train your body to overcome your lazy bowel.  Some fruits and juices are better for eliminating constipation than others.  There are many other things you can do, so for some free information just search for my name on google.

Hello Rudy,

I have a few problems that might not be problems at all, but it makes me worried. I normally have one bowl movement a day, while eating three meals a day. I am usually lactose sensitive, so any dairy products usually gives me the diarrhea.

But the last few days, I feel like my digestive system has been off. I feel like I have to go and when I try, I can’t. I even drank milk that usually 90% of the times makes me go in a short time, and even that hasn’t worked.

My diet doesn’t really lack fiber because normally I add benefiber to my drinks. I have used stool softener that didn’t really help, but I took laxative that helped. But I still feel like my system is still out of wack.

So is there something wrong with me. I know the stress of it doesn’t help at all, but when I feel I got to go, but nothing happens (and I don’t even feel constipated) I am worried something is wrong. Any suggestions are welcome.

Thank you,

Reeni

Hi Reeni,

Benefiber powder is mainly partially hydrolyzed guar gum.  I really don't believe it is natural to take benefiber and expect it to do what natural fiber does that is found in fruits, vegetables, and grains.  When you eat these foods they also provide other nutrients that work in conjunction with fiber to keep you regular.  Not only this, but fiber found in these fiber foods contains different kinds of fiber and all have their place in keeping your colon health and keeping your free of constipation.

I would not use benefiber or any other drug store fiber formulation in place of natural fiber.  You body knows the difference and at some point in time you will start to see side effects.

» left by Reeni from Waterville, ME (28 days 17 hours ago.)

Hi Rudy,

So taking benefiber might be a side affect, like say constipation/no much in bowl movement? Okay, maybe I will stop taking and replace with more fruits and vegetables.

I have another question if it's okay and not taking too much of your time. I have been having gurgling and unnatural gas that I haven't ever had in the past. Could this be because of not eating enough natural fiber? I mean I still have difficultly going 'number two' and can only go if I take a stool softener and period amount of time in the bathroom.

This never happened to me before, so I appreciate your answers. Thank-you so much.

~Reeni

I wanted to share some insight into the world of being regular. I have ulcerative colitis, my mother has crohns, to say we have bowel issues is an understatement. We have always struggled with maintaining any type of routine until recently. In the morning we have been drinking a couple of glasses of water first thing... before and food, coffee, tea, etc. and every morning we GO. How great is that? For anyone that needs some consistency in their lives try this out and hopefully it will work for you too.

Thank you Jeff for your great comment,

Drinking something first thing in the morning is a great way to active your system into the action necessary to eliminate the accumulated waste it has been collecting during the night.  Just make sure you don't drink juices with sugar. I alway recommend fresh squeezed lemon juice, no sugar in a glass of distilled water.  Then wait about 30 minutes or so before you eat something heavy.  Best of all don't eat something heavy, but some fruits, more juices, just water.
