An alarming number of people are overweight. This is nothing new. Even more alarming, however, is that with new weight loss programs emerging onto the market seemingly daily, the number of people with overweight problems grows as well. It would logically seem to correlate the other way. It would seem as though with more diets, plans, programs and weight loss professionals available to people, weight problems would be decreasing.

I have helped overweight people lose weight with Hypnotherapy since 1990. Nearly everyone I treat has had exposure to several, if not many, of the trendy and old standard weight loss plans available. Most overweight people could teach the class about diet and nutrition. Most of them can outline for you most of the more popular diet plans on the market. The problem becomes sticking to the program and incorporating it into your life.

My chief complaint about all of the popular weight loss and diet plans out there is that they focus on "weight loss" and "dieting." These imply a temporary life adjustment until the scale reads a particular number. Then, back to your usual way of eating. These programs fail to address the fact that what we have come to think of as "normal" in daily nutrition is only normal because we were raised to accept it as so. They fail address the inherent flaws in the typical American diet filled with flour, sugar, chemicals and fats. Everything is "super-sized." Have you eaten in a typical middle-of-the-road Italian restaurant lately? Are the potions totally out of control or what? You leave the restaurant with lunch for two days as left-overs. No normal human being can (nor should) eat that much food in one sitting. The entire food industry needs to re-evaluate what they sell, why they sell it, and what the long term implications to their consumers are. Now, maybe I'm just cynical, but if these programs could successfully educate the public to eat effectively so as to never have a weight problem again, would they stay in business? No, many of them they would not. They would not because what is presently thought of as a "normal diet" would be replaced a "correct, healthy or smart diet." Just as the automobile replaced the horse and buggy once people realized it's utility and as time passed, it has become to be taken as "normal." Now if food manufactures and suppliers were fore-thinkers, they could envision new food products that would promote heath. They would create their market. They would make money. Isn't that what they teach in business school? Isn't that what they've already done but in a negative way? They've created a market for harmful products. The challenge, to create a market for health promoting products. I think they could do it.

So, how does Hypnotherapy for weight loss work. The short answer is, "very well." But seriously, let me lay it out as simply as I can. nearly all of your daily choices are made at the unconscious level of awareness. If you did everything consciously, it would all take too long. Most behavioral choices happen seemingly spontaneously. That's really your unconscious level. If you think about it, most, if not all of this is learned. You didn't know how or what to eat as an infant. Someone taught you. Now, your unconscious mind just does what it knows how to do, automatically. It chooses what it knows will get the job done. Add in the possibility that people are unknowingly addicted to sugar and flour, and you have a strong and difficult to change set of urges in place. We actually have an addiction and a compulsion working together to successfully achieve a negative result, over-weight.

It's important to understand that the perspective of hypnotherapy is that you are succeeding at being over weight. That's right, succeeding. Your unconscious mind successfully follows the perfect sequence to achieve being over weight. Seen from this perspective, adjust the sequence, new results.

Hypnotherapy accesses your unconscious level of awareness. Since this is where your choices are made and your behavior starts, this is where we need to intervene. Hypnosis is one type of Hypnotherapy. Traditional Hypnosis, in the hands of a skilled professional, can re-educate your unconscious to make the choices that you have stated you want to make. It's really a form of re-patterning, or sequencing. The pattern as it exists leads to eating the wrong foods. Change the pattern and new choices will be made.

Other hypnotherapeutic interventions include NLP techniques, Cognitive-behavioral techniques, Visualization, Relaxation and more. Accessing your already existing motivational strategy and utilizing it in the achievement of the desired goal, will go a long way to dramatically improving your results, and your body appearance. The single most powerful thing that you can learn to do is to create a "compelling outcome picture." This is a picture of you, already having the body that you want. And when I say "it needs to be compelling," I really mean COMPELLING. This outcome picture needs to draw you toward it in a powerful way. It needs to be irresistible. It needs to really "rock" you. Make this picture over and over and over again.

In repeating these positive outcome, visualization, relaxation and cognitive-behavioral techniques over and over again, they will become automatic. The hypnosis term for these is "Auto-suggestion." This is nothing more than these new and helpful strategies becoming "automatic." Once your internal strategies become automatic, so do the behaviors. The eating behaviors become automatically positive and will allow you to achieve your desired positive outcomes. Just imagine what it will be like when you can automatically and effortlessly make nutritional selections that support your goals. Doing these things inside of a hypnotic state isn't essential for their success. It's just faster that way. Sometimes I work with a client in a hypnotic trance state. Other times I simply talk over and over about similarly related things until they've been layered into the client's unconscious mind. Either way, it all becomes automatic.

It almost seems too simple. Doesn't it? Imagine, positive suggestions, over, and over, and over again. Leading to the results you want. It sort of sounds like basic advertising principles. Now, imagine that.
